REVIEW: McDonald’s Angus Third Pounders (Deluxe, Bacon & Cheese and Mushroom & Swiss)

McDonald's Angus Third Pounder

Let me start off by saying that the new McDonald’s Angus Third Pounders are the best burgers ever released by The Golden Arches. Of course, that’s not really saying much since most of their burgers suck. It’s sort of like saying Kim Kardashian is the most famous Kardashian but only because the others didn’t come out with a sex tape.

I know I’ve said in the past that I love McDonald’s Double Cheeseburgers, but I only love them because it’s a little more than a dollar and I can use the grease from them to keep my chest hair from popping out of my collar. And I know I’ve said that I enjoy their Big Macs, but only because of my affinity towards that middle bun.

I know what it’s like to be a third wheel, Middle Bun.

I may really enjoy these new burgers, but it brings up one question in my head.  We’ve been eating crappy McDonald’s burgers for years and all this time they had the ability to make a really good burger, so what the fuck have they been doing for the past decade? Have they been eating McDonald’s food, getting sleepy soon after, taking a nap and then not getting any work done, like the rest of us do?

The Angus Third Pounders come in three varieties:

Deluxe – a burger with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles and mayonnaise.

Bacon & Cheese – a burger with cheese, bacon, red onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard.

Mushroom & Swiss – a burger with sauteed mushroom, mayonnaise and swiss cheese.

Which flavor you should try depends on what your taste buds yearn for and/or the amount of sodium your circulatory system can take, since each burger has between 1100-2070 milligrams of sodium.

All of the Angus Third Pounders are flavor packed. The Deluxe had a classic burger taste and I would totally do behind a shed. I could taste the Angus beef, cheese, pickles and mayonnaise (only because they put a huge glob of it on the burger), but I felt the red onions didn’t add much flavor. The Bacon & Cheese contained big slices of slightly crispy bacon that ensured I had some in every bite, although it’s taste wasn’t as prominent as I hoped it would be. Again, the red onions didn’t really provide much flavor, but the burger didn’t really need it and I would totally do it hard in the back seat of a car. The Mushroom & Swiss was probably my favorite among the three and I would do it the hardest in a janitor’s closet. The sauteed mushrooms were tasty, well sized and plentiful, but they didn’t overwhelm the sandwich, letting the flavor of the meat stand out.

The patties in the Angus Third Pounders are much tastier, less greasy and noticeably thicker than regular McDonald’s burger patties. The texture of the meat was different too, but in a good way. All of the burgers themselves were significantly larger than most other items on the menu. I hope McDonald’s keeps them that size and they don’t end up like the Big & Tasty, which started big, but now is much smaller.

Overall, I’m pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor of the McDonald’s Angus Third Pounders. Some might complain about the $4 price tag for each burger, but the other big burgers on the McDonald’s menu are only about 50-75 cents cheaper and they’re also 50-75 percent shittier. So I think the Angus Third Pounders are worth the extra scratch.

  1. I’m curious as to the produce. I know it’s been mentioned as being fresh tasting but is it actually fresh? …or is it shipped in like all of the other “produce”. They don’t really have other items that require a nice bright tomato or crispy iceberg…I wonder how they’re doing it? ….an Nationwide too. Hats off to McDees, I think they do a good jo at what they do. I bet these stick around for a bit.

    P.S. Nice classic hysterical review!

  2. I ate one today even though I said I wasn’t gonna. The first few bites were impressive, but it tasted real McDonald-ish by the time I was finished. I’d buy it again, though. Mushroom & Swiss.

  3. Yea the price is kind of silly. But you made a good point.. wtf? If they can make a good burger why haven’t they been doing it all along?

  4. while i was suprised that what i was eating was coming from mcdonalds the meat was still a little bland for me and will not over take hardee’s as my fat food burger of choice. not only that hardee’s coupons are epic 1.99 mushroom swiss hell yeah

  5. Bear, people aren’t kidding about the quality of the produce on these things. I’ve had a couple since I noticed my local McDonald’s had them…. so far only have gotten the “Deluxe”, as I’m not big on mushrooms or bacon. But the produce definitely plays a big part….. the lettuce and tomatos are both fresh and “real” – by comparison, a whopper I just had at Burger King had limp and lifeless and flavorless lettuce and tomatos. I didn’t get it with pickles but I’ve read people point out that the pickles are also thicker and crisper than what they slap on a quarter pounder or double cheeseburger. I don’t do mayo either but I assume it’s the same mayo as everything else.

As long as these stay a regular menu item, I have a hard time imagining not ordering one of these over a quarter pounder or whatever just to save less than a buck.

  6. Anyone know when these are coming to the Bay Area/Northern California – heard they have been in Southern California for almost 2 years

  7. My husband was having one of these the other day and I was totally scoping it out as I ate my chicken-ish nuggets. I bet it doesn’t compare to Carl’s Jr $6 burgers, but good to know McDs has made a “better” burger than before.

  8. My stomach felt a bit funky after eating these but it was definitely worth it. I’m impressed that McD’s now has the ability to make awesome burgers AND tasty French fries.

  9. Everyone seems to LOVE these! It’s nice that McDonald’s is finally making a quality product, but I don’t think that it will save their reputation.

  10. I ate the Deluxe and let me tell you it was so SALTY i really could not enjoy it. I felt my blood pressure go up before I was done No thanks for the new Mcsalty I will stick with wendys and mcdonald fries

    THAT IS ALL

  11. I can’t wait to try one. It will be hard not to compare them to the Carl’s Jr $6 line of Angus burgers, which are my favorite, especially the Low Carb version.

However, I still love McD’s and will give it a fair shot. I cannot believe how long it’s been since they introduced a new burger. I think I am one of the only people who lament the Arch Deluxe’s absence. That pepper bacon was so yummy. It sounds like the test kitchens have been focusing on “premium” chicken and salad products. What will be next, McSalmon nuggets?

  12. this is the marvo i like… dude i love the burger shots. the joint on the right looks like a whooper. @michael, the arch deluxe was the realness – like the only burger in the franchise to have a tomato?

  13. I think a Five Guys or Goodburger review from me should happen soon after seeing those squished buns. They look like Grimace sat on them. Speaking about Grimace, I fucking miss the McDonald’s gang.

  14. Just tried the bacon & cheese – good but I don’t rate it better than the double quarter pounder or any of the Six Dollar Burgers at Carls Jr – one thing I noticed I feel pretty good just ate it and after those Six Dollar Burgers I am pretty much knocked out for a minute…not sure if thats a good or a bad sign but I give it a thumbs up.

  15. @girl stick a penis in mcdonalds? probably not the greasiest i’ve ever had.

  16. angry bob agrees with Neil the Hammer. angry bob likes salt, which is both tasty and good for rubbing into wounds. angry bob also needs to maintain a minimum blood pressure to make he doesn’t lose any angry. However, even angry bob has his limits and the Deluxe was pretty close to that limit.

    that is all

  17. These things have been in the NY Metro area (and that’s generous, as I’ve found them in Poughkeepsie, NY and CT) for about 2 years now. Don’t like them. The patties are dry and the bacon is the usual terrible McD’s bacon. Their bacon has nothing on Wendy’s and BK’s. It’s paper thin and nearly tasteless.

  18. I actually liked the bacon and cheese burger, but Mcdonalds doesn’t even hold a candle to Burger King’s fries and of course, burgers.

But honestly, I would get this again cause it was pretty cheap and you get a slight imbalance of quantity and quality. But somehow, quantity always wins.

  19. Ricky, you can’t seriously be expounding the virtues of Burger King fries, especially in comparision to McDonald’s…BK fries are without a doubt the WORST fast food fries out there- no flavor, weird grainy texture, and only BARELY tolerable if you actually see the worker pull them out of the fryer and dump them fresh into your bag and then dump tons of salt on them…YUCK! Really? No, really. I must know what it is you like about these sticks of what I’m not even sure are actual potatoes. I am dumbfounded…

  20. Maybe I’m the only one to notice but……Why the fuck all the fucking swearing all of the fucking sudden. Did you run out of shitty humor and had to resort to fucking swearing? Anyways thats all I got. Just noticed that as of late you use the F word as well as your staff way to much for literate people.

  21. @@#%@##$: Hello. No, you’re not the only one who noticed. I noticed too. And I am appalled by the way me and my staff have had to resort to profanity to try to get a laugh. Although, I don’t think we’re using profanity to get laugh. We’re using profanity to make our points a little more succinct, much like you’re using it in your comment. When I say, “so what the fuck have they been doing for the past decade”, I’m using the word fuck to make my point a little bit more stronger and to let the reader know that I might be a little upset, because “so what have they been doing for the past decade” just doesn’t have that punch I’m looking for.

Also, if you wanted to make your comment a little more insulting, I would’ve said, “Did you run out of shitty ‘humor’ and had to resort to fucking swearing?” Note how I put quotes around the word humor. I think that would’ve made it a lot better, and I might’ve cried if you did that.

  22. I’m lovin’ it Great burger(the bacon n cheese was great). I would like a better bacon out of McDonalds, but this will suffice.

  23. i only got this because you guys said it was good now i hate you all. I was on my way home drunk getting ready to buy a delicious 6 dollar teriyaki burger the best fast food burger ever and i remembered you guys said the angus burgers at McDonald’s were good it sucked burn in hell i hate you guys so much

  24. Have had the Deluxe and the Bacon (not a mushroom fan), both times while on the road and McDs was the easiest spot to pull into, thought both burgers fell in the C+/B- range- not bad, but disappointing. Had to wipe off about 70% of the giant glob of mayo on the Deluxe, which is a pain in the ass when you’re driving. Found both burgers pretty dry, not all that tasty, nothing offensive, nothing noteworthy. Basically, would have been just as happy w/ a 1/4 pounder. In the future, when stuck w/ McDs as the only convenient stop on the road, will just stick w/ the double cheeseburgers, small fries, and decent chipotle snack wraps to hold me over.
