REVIEW: Jell-O Mousse Temptations Dark Chocolate Decadence

For many of us, the month of January represents a new beginning, the start of a new year and a new you. The infamous New Year’s Resolution of losing weight is as American as all-you-can-eat buffets, deep-fried Snickers and funnel cakes. Most resolutions are broken within the first month, because there’s always someone tempting you with pizza, fried chicken, hookers, or whatever you’ve pledged to stop consuming.

To many of us, especially us ladies, chocolate is a huge weakness. Countless times we find ourselves giving into this sweet, sinful confection, and like a kid at chubby camp getting caught with a Twinkie in one hand and a can of whipped cream in the other, we feel guilty after we indulge, and scold ourselves for breaking our resolution for the tenth year in a row.

Jell-O Mousse “Temptations” wants you to feel good about yourself if you need a chocolate fix. At only 60 calories, the Dark Chocolate Decadence promises that this mousse-like treat will satisfy your primal urge for chocolate and cure even the worst possible case of PMS.

Fat chance.

I’m pretty sure Mousse Temptations Dark Chocolate Decadence would make any chocolate-loving woman become an even bigger bitch (admit it ladies, we all are bitches before Aunt Flo comes to town).

It was absolutely horrible. The texture was like that of dry pudding with a bunch of air pumped into it. I’m a big fan of Jell-O and their sugar-free desserts, despite the fact they don’t use Bill Cosby in their commercials anymore, but this product certainly wasn’t decadent and the only thing I was tempted to do was to throw away my unfinished cup, which I did.

Even though it’s low in calories, it’s unbearable to eat. Just because it says it’s chocolate doesn’t mean that it’s good, and this “treat” is the crown jewel of deception. However, what can you expect from something that has less calories than one of those miniscule 100 calorie packs that wouldn’t even satisfy a tsetse fly or Mary-Kate Olsen?

If you want to be a little naughty without breaking your resolution, maybe it would be best if you have five M&M’s or just one Hershey’s Miniature. It’s not an entire bag, or a King Size bar, but these choices are much better than having a Jell-O Mousse Temptation.

  1. I agree on this product’s review!!! I bought this stuff and I was like WTF?!?!!? Funny because normally bad food normally taste better when drunk so maybe the makers at jello pudding were? Anyway, I stick to the sugar free kind for 60 calories.

  2. OMG I love, love, love these mousse cups! I actually think they’re even better than Jell-‘s regular pudding. I’m addicted to chocolate, so no, one cup won’t magically cure my craving for an entire day, but they make a wonderful little treat. And they taste even better frozen!

  3. I came close to buying this product during my last grocery store visit, but chose the Kozy Shack (God, I love that brand name) ‘SimplyWell Pudding Snack’ instead. Now THAT was some decent dark chocolate pudding, with all kinds of convincing health claims to boot (and prebiotic fiber!!! Woot! Who doesn’t love fiber?) Seriously, it was good, you should give it a try if they have The Shack where you are.

    1. Kozy Shack is really good. I love their Chocolate Covered Strawberry flavor (with real pieces of strawberries in it) that usually comes out during the winter months. They also make decent flan as well. I haven’t tried the SimplyWell from them yet though.

  4. I don’t mind these, actually, but they really only taste good if you are on a diet and it’s the only “sweet” thing you eat…

  5. Sorry, but I LOVE these things. I was a frequent buyer of the s/f pudding cups until these came out and I tried them…I’ve bought nothing else since. I have one per day with my lunch at work, and I’m still not sick of them. I think the texture and taste are AMAZING for 60 calories!

  6. I think these were reviewed on iateapie and they liked them, but it is interesting to read another perspective. I think expectations play a big part in how we respond to food. Perhaps people who eat diet food all of the time expect less and rate such things more highly.

Anyway, I’m with Marvo on the New Year’s Resolutions (no, that’s not a resolution to spend less on prostitutes this year). I don’t make them. If I want to lose weight, I’ll do it through small and gradual changes (usually in portion control).

    1. New Year’s resolutions are so cliche.

I’m in love with chocolate. I’m in love with sugar. And when I think of chocolate, “sugar free” most definitely does not come to mind. As a matter of fact, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of sugar free “chocolate.” I’m not a fat ass, nor do I have Type II diabetes. I just believe in this thing called moderation, a vital component of a healthy diet. But maybe, just maybe, I would have tried this faux chocolate had it gotten a positive review from our dear Miss Kayla.

  7. I wholeheartedly agree with this review. I bought a pack of these a couple of months ago & have four cups remaining in the fridge. The first one I ate was bad, and the second was no better.

  8. I don’t know about the dark chocolate ones, but the regular chocolate is DELISH!!! I wish they were cheaper, but I will definitely keep buying them. Do not listen to this review. They’re heavenly.

  9. Interesting to see the differing opinions – seems to be either love or hate. I am firmly in the HATE column. I thought the texture of these killed them – nothing like mousse, nothing like pudding, it was like eating air – and I was barely able to finish half of a cup.

  10. I love mousse…real mousse and sometimes real moose (don’t ask). But, I HATE this mousse. I think Bill Cosby dry-farted in a batch of pudding and…VOILA…shit mousse. Disgusting!

  11. i’m on weight watchers…i usually get the 60 cal sugar free puddings and freeze em. last longer and kinda like ice cream…

  12. I know I’m about a year late but I just saw these and tried them out. People here seem to be very split on them but I enjoy them a lot. They are a tad pricy but it doesn’t feel like you are eating a low calorie or diet food at all. I’ve had low calorie and sugar free pudding before and I do not like it.

The texture of these mousse cups is interesting, but neither adds nor takes away from the experience in my mind. I’ve had the caramel and chocolate mint ones. The chocolate mint is definitely the better of the two and has a strong chocolate and strong mint taste. The caramel one to me tastes more of tapioca.

I hope people try this out and keep buying it as I’d like to see it remain on the shelves, and hopefully come down in price too!

  13. I definitely do NOT agree with this review, because Mousse temptations are DELICIOUS. I’m eating one right now! Maybe the texture is not great, but mix it up a little and it becomes smoother. The taste is amazing to me, and it’s only 60 calories and completely sugar free. Reading the comments, I realized something. I realized that this Jello pudding is like the song “Fireflies”, by Owl City. Some people absolutely hate it, while some people totalLy LOVE it (I am on the this side of course). There is just no ‘in between’. That is excatly how it is for this dark chocolate pudding. No one says it’s ‘okay’.

  14. I just tried the dark choc mousse and it tasted terrible. I figured there had to be a mistake because I love dark chocolate and every kind of mousse. I tried another cup and sure enough, still sucked. I’m not a newbie to low fat, sugar free or “diet” desserts either and it still was awful.
