REVIEW: Triple Double Oreo Neapolitan

Triple Double Oreo Neapolitan

The Triple Double Oreo Neapolitan has been out for a few months, but it only recently showed up at my local Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named. However, I wouldn’t have noticed they carried it if I didn’t have to take a shortcut through the aisle of canned goods, at the end of which I found their stock of these Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named-exclusive cookies.

No, I didn’t find them in the cookie aisle with all the other Oreo varieties. I found them somewhere a person would hide them if they didn’t want anyone to find them. Also, if I was a few inches shorter I may not have noticed them at all because they were on the top most shelf.

Actually, it’s surprising that my local Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named carried it because when it comes to carrying new products, it sucks. For cheap goods, getting bruises from shopping carts being driven by children, and watching people frantically dig through the $5 DVD bin and get excited when they find the movie Double Impact, it’s quite good.

You see, I can walk into a Target and almost always come out with a new product to review. The same can be said about Safeway. But when it comes to the Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named, all I’ve usually come out with is disappointment…and bruised ankles. It’s happened so much that I decided to give my disappointment a name — Blue Balls.

But after finally ending up at my local Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named and trying the Triple Double Oreo Neapolitan, I have to say perhaps they were located at the end of the canned goods aisle because they’re not that great.

The Triple Double Oreo Neapolitan uses three crunchy Golden Oreo cookies and in between those are a layer of strawberry creme filling and a layer of chocolate creme filling. The color scheme looks like they would make an ugly pair of knee high argyle socks, but as a creme sandwich cookie, it’s not bad looking.

The issue I have with the Triple Double Oreo Neapolitan is that the strawberry creme’s flavor overwhelms the chocolate creme. It’s as if the strawberry creme is a Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named and the chocolate creme is an unsupervised child who gets lost in the Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named. Having what is basically a strawberries and creme Oreo is fine and it’s good, but the chocolate creme needed to stand out more in order for the cookie as a whole to stand out.

Overall, the Triple Double Oreo Neapolitan may not be Blue Balls-disappointing, but they are a letdown.

Item: Triple Double Oreo Neapolitan
Price: $3.48
Size: 13.1 ounces
Purchased at: Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named
Rating: 5 out of 10
Pros: Crunchy Golden Oreo cookies. Three cookies and two different cremes. Finally, finding something somewhat new at the Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named.
Cons: Disappointing. Strawberry creme overwhelms the cookie. Chocolate creme flavor is non-existent. One cookie has 110 calories. Parents who let their children drive shopping carts. My local Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named not getting it sooner. Getting lost in a store.

  1. If you ate the oreo the way oreos are supposed to be eaten, Marvo, the strawberry would not be able to overwhelm the chocolate. Not the fault of the cookie. Didn’t your mother teach you anything about proper sandwich cookie protocol? First you twist off the top cookie and eat the filling. Then you twist off the middle cookie and eat the filling under that. Finally, you eat the cookie tops and bottoms and middles which (if you’ve done it right with foresight) still have some of the filling attached. See? No overwhelming because the strawberry and chocolate are eaten separately except perhaps for the middle cookie. You may eat the cookie tops, bottoms, and middles (with main fillings detached) in any order during this process if you like to alternate cookie and filling.

If you prefer the filling, you need to twist off and eat the top cookie and the bottom cookie first (following the general rule of saving the best for last) and then scrape off the filling on both sides of the middle cookie. You can do this with a knife, setting it carefully aside out of reach of any creme filling hogs with no ethics, if you really want your last taste to be filling. Otherwise the proper protocol is to use your teeth, although fingers can be allowed. Alternately, you could eat the top + filling underneath together and then middle + filling underneath or bottom + filling above together. But I would never advise the way you did it, namely cramming the whole darned cookie into your mouth at once. One layer of cookie at a time is quite enough.

  2. Normally I love reading the posts on this site however this one is overly obnoxious due to the writers attempt at “cuteness” I guess thats the attempt? Talk about overkill of not mentioning the store name but making a big spectacle out of not doing so, wow please stop!

    1. It could be overkill. Or it could be if I mention its name it means certain doom for the planet.

I’m also wondering if you know what store I’m talking about in the review. You don’t mention it in your comment, so I’m going to assume you don’t know and perhaps that’s what frustrates you.

If that’s the case, I’m not going to tell you because telling you could mean certain doom for the Earth.

  3. I found these at my local… um, Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named… once, and I didn’t buy them although they looked good… and I never found them again. They haven”t been discontinued already, have they? I still want some!

Despite this review, I think I would like them… I’m a fan of both Golden Oreos and strawberry filling in Oreos. I used to love the (now discontinued) Strawberry Milkshake Creme Oreos; the new “Berry Burst Ice Cream” flavor just doesn’t cut it. Damn, I hope I can still find some of the Neapolitan Triple Double Oreos… they haven’t been around for very long, and I will be disappointed if I’ve already missed my chance.

    1. It was limited edition, so I don’t think they’ll be making anymore. But they could come back in the future. Or if you’re impatient and desperate, there’s always eBay.

  4. Hey Marvo, is this “Superstore-Behemoth-That-Must-Not-Be-Named,” walmart? haha. I too live in HI and I havent really seen it yet and, despite the average rating, I would still like to give it a try. If I am correct of what that superstore is, then which one? I think i’ve seen it in in the Kunia one but I did not buy it and when I went back a few weeks-1month later it was NOT there anymore :(. Can you help a fellow local out. ;). Thanks!

    1. YOU’VE DOOMED EVERYONE BY SAYING ITS NAME!!!

      NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Before the world comes to an end, you can get it at the Keeaumoku one. It has a shelf of them left.

      1. I think it’s okay to say the name now, since the world is supposed to end today (Friday, October 21, 2011) anyway. Hopefully before my current job from hell is due, since I’m really tired of working on it non-stop all week (except for this blog distraction). So eat all the oreos you want!

  5. Great review! What gets me is that somehow these things are over 100 calories. Now, the last time I ate an oreo was as a young kid, but even then they were kinda small. So with some approximation for the added layers… Man that is some impressive caloric density.

The strawberry flavor overpowering the chocolate is something I run into all the time with about anything. e.g. A protein powder Neapolitan will be ruined by a perfect 1/3 serving of each flavor because strawberry is ALWAYS strong (especially of the more artificial variety).

  6. This revew was interesting…I personaaly LOVE the “neopoltian” oreo variety. I bought it from dominicks yesterday, at its soooo yummy, its only second to the “peanut butter” oreo (IMO). OH, and let me take this time to say R.I.P. to the “coffee and cream” oreo, I haven’t seen it in years, and that was my ALL TIME FAVORITE OREO!
