REVIEW: Yoplait Lactose Free 99% Fat Free Yogurt (Peach and Strawberry)

Yoplait Lactose Free 99% Fat Free Yogurt (Peach and Strawberry)

Being a hardcore fan takes dedication. It entails joining fan clubs, showing up whenever the thing you’re a fan of makes a public appearance, and devoting a huge portion of your week to enjoying whatever it is. Also a little bit of stalking. I believe the kids have created a delightful portmanteau for that kind of stalker fan: “Stan.”

But can one be a “stan” for a dairy product? I think I may qualify. I freaking love yogurt, man. I eat it every day. I have tried many brands, and I can say with confidence that I’ve settled on Yoplait as my brand of choice. Maybe it’s Yoplait’s high amount of sugar talking, but Yoplait is my jam. That’s not to say that fruit-flavored yogurts are my ultimate faves (see what I did there?) I have my old standbys: Vanilla, Boston Cream Pie, and Banana Cream Pie. These are the flavors that I can’t do without, the ones over which I will seriously get mad if my store hasn’t stocked them or if someone steals them from my fridge. And the stalking… Yes, I will do a drive-by of the dairy section just to see if my favorites are in stock, not even to buy them. I don’t leave scary notes declaring my love, but those little containers know what I’m thinking. They can see it in my steely, meaningful gaze of longing mixed with a touch of resentment.

Now Yoplait has provided a whole new product for me to obsess over by releasing lactose-free versions of the creamy goodness: Yoplait Lactose Free 99% Fat Free Yogurt. (Just in time for Lactose Intolerance Awareness Month! This is actually a thing. Can’t wait for the Hallmark product tie-ins… I’m thinking gassy teddy bears clutching milk bottles.) I’m not even sensitive to lactose, but I will buy this variety.

For now, Yoplait Lactose Free 99% Fat Free Yogurt only comes in Strawberry, Peach, Cherry, and French Vanilla flavors and not in delicious cake/pie flavors… but as a true stan, I don’t hate, I appreciate, and I will kick the faces of anyone who does otherwise. I decided to sample the Strawberry and Peach ones since those are the sweet flavors that got me through my toughest times in 3rd and 4th grade. OK, not really, but they were always on my after school snack list. Lactose Free Yoplait 99% Fat Free Yogurt boasts that it has 50 percent of your recommended daily value of calcium, so we’re off to a good start. Curious about the other ingredients, I read the label and saw that the only ingredients “not found in regular yogurt” were a lactase enzyme, Tricalcium phosphate and Vitamin D3. Interesting. It appears that the yogurt DOES have lactose, but it also contains an added enzyme to help break it down into nothing. But look, it’s a genius addition, and if anybody complains about it they’re just jealous. I’m going to have Vitamin D3 tattooed on my face so everyone will know I’m down with the Yoplait nutrients.

I was pleased to find that the enzyme did absolutely nothing to change the flavor of the Strawberry and Peach yogurts. Both were sweet and creamy and had a nice smooth texture. You seriously wouldn’t know whether you were eating regular yogurt or “lactose-free” yogurt if it weren’t for the stylish, bright green packaging that proudly proclaims the latter.

I’m sure all this is welcome news for those amongst us with lactose intolerance. Poor devils. Sure, alternative non-dairy yogurt exists — I’ve tried soy, but it’s just not the same. And it’s expensive. Those little beans can be so hard to milk. So now we have an alternative to the alternative. Works out fine because they’re just imitators of the Originator. And as the Yoplait stan that I am, it pains to me say that, price-wise, Yoplait Lactose Free is only slightly less expensive than the non-dairy brands. One thing to consider is that the label may have the word “Free” on it a lot, but the price is 90 cents, which is a little more than I’ve paid for regular or Light Yoplait yogurt in the past. On the bright side, if my insides decide they suddenly can’t process yogurt anymore then I’ll have a reason to keep living because there’s no replacing Yoplait. EVER.

  1. Real yogurt is already basically lactose-free; the lactic acid bacteria that are responsible for yogurt’s tangy flavor consume the lactose sugar and produce lactic acid. Unless you have a milk allergy, there’s no reason to pay extra for non-dairy yogurt.

I’m very lactose-intolerant and I eat Greek yogurt for lunch every day without any adverse side effects.

Keep up the good work, IB 🙂

    1. Actually, the yogurts the same cost. and also, real yogurt is far from lactose free. I have a lactose interolerance and can’t eat normal yogurt.

  2. This is awesome! Being Asian, I am not blessed with a high tolerance to lactose, but ignore it because I love yogurt. I’m currently on a greek yogurt kick. Anyways, I’ll be sure to pick some of these up the next time I’m in the store. If you said it’s good, then it must be, right? Right!

  3. I am severely lactose intolerant (aka just //one// Hershey’s Kiss kills me- not literally though haha) and can consume regular yogurt just fine. I bet this is some marketing tactic for people who are lactose intolerant and know that yogurt is a dairy product but aren’t aware that the Lactobacillus already does the work of lactase enzymes.

  4. I am severely lactose intolerant and have not been able to consume yogurt like some of you in these comments. I am jealous 🙂 I still get a reaction from greek yogurt, any yogurt. I tried this yoplait product today and it was so sickeningly sweet – disgusting! Like a gelatin dessert. I do love Green Valley Organics lactose free yogurt however, which is not too sweet & is creamy and lower calorie than yoplait (although it is very expensive unfortunately, I splurge on it). It’s hard to find- just at whole foods and Kings grocery by me in the Northeast.

  5. I only tried the vanilla once. But I remember liking it more than the normal yogurts. The flavor/texture was just more pleasing, even though they are the same thing. I will have to pick more up to make sure.

But personally, I can’t stand the cake/pie flavors. They only sell them in blue light packaging and it has a weird taste to it always. The flavor name always tempts me though.

  6. This stuff is amazing, and is not more expensive than regular yogurt from Yoplait. So it couldn’t be a way of making more money for their company. Also I don’t believe the stuff about lactose intolerant people being able to eat regular yogurt because if I eat regular yogurt I get sick for days. I am sooo happy they came out with this line,it is sooooo good and inexpensive. Everyone should try it even if your not lactose intolerant.

  7. I laughed when I saw their new lactose-free yogurt, because yogurt is the only dairy food (besides certain hard cheeses) that naturally produces lactase, as a result of the fermenting process. So either their usual yogurt isn’t traditional yogurt, or this yogurt is a scam. To their credit… It’s also possible they didn’t know about lactase in yogurt, and maybe they just added extra lactase unknowingly? It seems like if they wanted to expand their consumer base, it would have been more cost-effective to run an add telling people that yogurt is naturally okay for lactose intolerant people.

Those of you who don’t believe that yogurt is lactose-free: google it. Maybe your stomaches are reacting to all the sugar, or some other ingredient. It could also be psychosomatic (if you expect to get sick, you’ll probably get sick).

    1. You might want to check the accuracy of the sites you found when googling your info. While yogurt naturally produces lactase that breaks down the lactose in milk when yogurt is made it does not break down all of it. I assumed that it was lactose free and the nausea I felt when consuming it was for another reason until I tried this yogurt and felt none! The added lactase makes sure all the lactose is broken down, something no regular yogurt can claim.

      1. I’m very lactose intolerant. When I saw that yogurt, I was so happy. But unfortunately it’s not 100% lactose free. I tried it and reacted the same way I did when I had normal yogurt, well perhaps not as severely. I tried again a few times to make sure it wasn’t something else I ate that day. No such luck, I have severe lactose intolerance and it won’t work for me, I even tried taking ultra lactaid with it, no such luck. Perhaps another brand would work? 🙁

        1. I had the same issue. I was excited to find the lactose-free variety, but baffled by the typical lactose side effects. I tried it again a few weeks later with the same result. That’s why I came online and did this search — to see if others had reviewed it with these issues as well.

  8. I’m questioning the ingredients of the lactose free yogurt. I am lactose intolerant, and it made me sick.

  9. I tried this yogurt today and love it. I am lactose intollerant and have not been able to enjoy yogurt or any other dairy for years without taking medicine. Yes yogurt naturally produces some lactase but it still has lactose in it, check the Nation Digestive Diseases website if you don’t believe me. I was even tested for milk allergies, nope just don’t produce much lactase naturally. With all the health benefits of yogurt I am happy to find one that doesn’t make me sick!!

  10. It made me sick too! I tried it twice to make sure ( the second time on an empty stomach) and will not buy it again.. So sad!

  11. I am so happy yoplait came out with this. I like yogurt but it made me feel unwell…so far I’ve only found the strawberry flavor but that’s my fav anyway. I’m happy but disappointed it costs more than regular yoplait!!!

  12. Dear Yoplait,

I was so very excited about trying yuor new Yoplait Lactose Free yogurt and i am sad to say that it has made me very sick, nausea, upset stomach/cramping, head ache, diarrhea etc. The side effects i have listed are those of lactose intolerant symptoms. I am very upset and would like to know if this “new” yogurt claims to be lactose free why am I feeling sick and why the ingredients list such things as it contains low fat milk and nonfat milk which means that your product is not lactose free. I would like someone to contact me and explain what may have gone wrong. Thanks for your time and i look forward to hearing fromy you very soon.

  13. I was very happy to see a lactose free product coming from you. I have been buying Yoplait products for years, sometime I react sometime not. However this product is cloyingly sweet, at 26g of sugar.
Will you ever change that formula.

  14. I have been getting my lactose yogurt at my local Publix here in Miami(The Crossings) lately I notice it is not available..i have asked several times over the past 2-3 months, but Iv’e been told, they have been getting any supply.. Can you explain? I really love the taste and it is smooth, not lumpy…

  15. I’m glad that it wasn’t just me who got sick from the lactose-free Yoplait.

Hoo boy. I got the same reaction I’d get if I ate ice cream without taking one of my magic Lactaid pills. Plus it WAS too sweet. Yuck.

So when I’m seriously craving yogurt–which isn’t often–I’ll buy my favorite key lime pie flavor and dose up on lactase enzyme on my own.

    1. i was very sad to find that they discontinued this yogurt. It was delicious and my stomach didn’t have any problem with. Nor did i ever feel sick eating it. I would use it in my banana nut crunch cereal instead of milk.

Since then i had to look for an alternative. Silk milk have a soy milk based yogurt i’ve tried the peach mango..its very creamy and delicious. they do not seem to carry just the vanilla flavors and its quite pricy i paid 1.19 for just one little cup. its a good treat. Im hoping yoplait re-attempts the lactose free yogurt.

  16. I was able to find the lactose yogurt at a few of the stores, and Now I can’t find it and they said that it has been discontinued……….where in Sarasota, Fl, will I be able to find it……PLEASE………………thank you, Maxine

  17. I’m reading in the comments, the yogurt made a lot of people sick, not me. I was so glad when I saw the lactose free yogurt,I truly enjoyed eating yogurt again, now I can’t find the yogurt anywhere. Is there any where in Charlottesville,VA I can find it

  18. love love love this yogurt could not live without it
thank you yoplait !!! i wish other companys would come up with more lactose free food

  19. I tried the cherry & peach lactose free. They were good. I enjoyed them. It didn’t irrate my stomache.

  20. I’m so happy yoplait finally came out with something like this. My question was why did it take so long?? Manufacturers are falling all over themselves to corner the gluten free market, meanwhile they forget the entire consumer base of lactose intolerant people. I will point out that while yes L.acidophilus does produce lactase, it will not reduce the lactose completely. Therefore people who have severe lactose intolerance will not be able to tolerate regular yogurt without the addition of additional lactase enzyme. So kudos to yoplait for not listening to those posters above accusing this of being a marketing scam, they have no real knowledge or experience with this issue. I am a physician, and I see a wide spectrum of this issue among my patients. I recommend this yogurt to them now.

  21. I am very lactose intolerant, I cannot eat regular yogurt. In
Canada we have lactose free Yoplait and it tastes entirely different
from the product here in the US. The Lactose free Yoplait In Canada
has a lot less sugar and is creamier, delicious. I wrote to Yoplait
here in the US last year and they told me that the US yogurt is the
way Americans like it, 26 grams of sugar, there is no choice down
here, Yoplait is the only one on the store shelves, more choices in
    Canada.

  22. Cannot find where to buy Yoplait lactose free fat free yogurt??? Where is Ralph’s located??? Thank you

  23. I JUST FROZE LACTOSE FREE YOPLAIT ATE IT FROZEN & IT IS WONDERFUL, ICE CRYSTALS LIKE A POPCICLE BUT CREAMY TOO. PLEASE CUT BACK ON THE SUGAR, YOU ARE KILLING US. WE COULD EAT MORE YOGART IF LESS SUGAR. T

  24. I have been eating the lactose free Yoplait for several years and love it. I do not like the vanilla particularly and am ok with the strawberry which is hard to find. I love the cherry which disappeared about two weeks ago in all stores and only had the peach once in another section of the country. What gives?
If I had access to peach and now cherry I would buy a lot more. I have asked but no one can give me an answer as to why peach is not available and now cherry has disappeared.

  25. I have tried the lactose fee and love it, but now I can’t find it in any stores. Would like to buy the product again, need to know where the closest store to my location. Zip code 33950 thank you

  26. I tried the strawberry lactose free yogurt and it made me very sick and gave me long bouts of diarrhea. I am lactose intolerant and a celiac as well. So I don’t know what’s in this yogurt to make me so sick but putting milk in something and adding acidophilus to make it lactose free makes no sense.

    1. I am lactose intolerant and cannot eat any yogurt but lactose-free. The problem is that the only flavors available here are Vanilla Yoplait which is terrible, peach which is ok but I am tired of it and years ago but not now, cherry which is wonderful. So at various Walmarts, the vanilla sits unsold and the peach occasionally appears. I have called Yoplait and they do not seem to care.

  27. I am lactose intolerant and can not find Yoplait lactose free yogurt at any of the Walmart stores in Charleston SC. The only Walmart that did carry the lactose free Yoplait yogurt was in Tanger Mall, but, they stop carrying it. I don’t know why because a lot of people were buying it. If you know where I can buy it, please let me know.

    1. My Walmarts have stopped carrying the vanilla or peach in lower Alabama but I found some today at a Winn-Dixie. I really miss my favorite, cherry and would eat it almost everyday if it were available. I do not understand because that flavor always sold out first when they did carry it.
