SPOTTED ON SHELVES – 1/29/2014

Here are some interesting new and limited edition products found on store shelves by us and your fellow readers. If you’ve tried any of the products, share your thoughts about them in the comments.

Welch's PB&J Snacks

What? Only now Welch’s realizes their jelly + peanut butter = profit! (Spotted by Dubba at Market Basket.)

Chex Mix Popped White Cheddar

Oh, what won’t you mix your Chex with in a Chex Mix, Chex. Junk Food Guy has a review.
(Spotted by Michael at Schnucks.)

Farm Rich Limited Special Edition Toasted Ravoli and Parmesan Encrusted Mozzarella Sticks

I guess what makes this special is that if you don’t care for one fried cheese-filled finger food, you can select another fried cheese-filled finger food. (Spotted by Claire G at Weis Markets.)

SirachaCandyCanes

I know. It’s the end of January and all of the Christmas stuff has long been sold off during a 90 percent clearance sale, but these Wonka candy canes have Pixy Stix powder in them. Drug cartels take note. (Spotted by Charity at World Market.)

Betty Crocker Chicken Helper BOLD

Last year, there was Ulitmate Chicken Helper. Now there’s Chicken Helper Bold. Are Extreme Chicken Helper, Chicken Helper Flavor Charged, Intense Chicken Helper, or Kickin’ Chicken Helper in our future? And yes, I borrowed some of those names from condoms. (Spotted by Kassie at King Soopers.)

  1. Fried ravioli *is* awesome. If the frozen food instructions are to oven-bake the previously fried snack foods, then the entire concept is awesome. (What I resent in frozen food is when there are half a dozen steps with three pans to get it unfrozen. Microwave, fine. Oven, fine. Parboiling, then sautéing, while defrosting a sauce packet gently over a 24-hour period? Not fine. I’m looking at YOU, Trader Joe.)

Inquiring minds want to know what happened to Betty Crocker’s plans to rebrand the various helpers as just Helper, on the grounds that specifying hamburger or chicken or tuna was too constraining to the modern cook. Hoax?

  2. I live in the home of toasted ravioli (the city (St. Louis) not an actual home made out of toasted ravioli) and it’s traditionally meat-filled, not cheese, although you can find variations. They’re served in virtually every bar, restraunt, pizza joint, etc. as well as being available frozen in the grocery store. It’s nice to see them spreading nation wide!

    1. Still – the cheese versions are always better tasting. Aldi has some good ones now, too.

  3. haven’t tried the pixy stix candy canes, but big lots sold a sour powder candy filled candy cane over christmas. there were four different flavors and the whole thing was a disappointment. the cane was sickly sweet and flavorless and the powder was not sour. i was looking for the pixy stix one and couldn’t find them anywhere.
