QUICK REVIEW: Herdez Cocina Mexicana Chicken Mole Bowl

Herdez Chicken Mole Bowl

Purchased Price: $3.50 (on sale)
Size: 10 oz.
Purchased at: Safeway
Rating: 7 out of 10
Pros: Mole sauce had a pretty accurate flavor and a little spicy kick. Great size for a work lunch. Can be microwaved thawed (so you can keep it at your desk and prevent food theft!) Most of the chicken was tender. Rice had a good, sticky texture and real cilantro taste with a hint of lime. Kudos for at least trying to make authentic-tasting frozen Mexican food.
Cons: Some of the chicken was dry. Expensive for the amount of food you get. Mole sauce could have had a stronger presence. There were bland spots in the rice. Don’t pronounce mole like the animal (it’s moe-LAY).

  1. The Mole may be authentic but I have yet to see a real mexican make cilantro lime rice. Nowhere in mexico am I aware them making rice this way. Maybe I’m wrong but I eat a lot of real mexican food and the rice is either plain or tomato based.

  2. I tried this a few weeks ago and I think that sounds about right. I mixed my mole with the rice and I’m not sure that helped it much to be honest. The cinnamon note in the sauce was a little too strong towards the end.

    1. Honestly, while I was eating it I wondered the same thing. My first thought was cheese, but it wasn’t stringy and didn’t really taste like anything. I just kinda ate it with the rice and went with it. It didn’t seem to add or detract any flavor.

  3. Mole is an acquired taste for sure. I’d be curious how their other meals taste though

    1. that’s what i though too Ant29. i wonder what it should be. and where’s the little green sprig of cilantro?

      1. I believe the picture on the box is a “serving suggestion” – it took me a second to realize the glob on the box is probably guacamole (why you would have that on mole, I’m not entirely certain).

If the yellow blob was egg, I’d like to think I would have noticed, but I’m not perfect.

  4. We sell those at my local Walmart. Try the Huevos Rancheros bowl, it’s very good 🙂

  5. I’ve tried a few of these bowls and have to admit that they’re all pretty decent.

  6. There’s no accent mark on the e. I think it’s pronounced MOLE-ay, not mole-AY.

  7. I haven’t found the Mole to try but I am looking for it. I just had the Carnitas & Charro Beans and it was very good. I felt it was good value for the price and amount of food. In fact I couldn’t finish the meal and am saving it for tomorrow. I will put the remainder in a tortilla. Thanks for a quality product.

  8. I rarely eat frozen meals anymore because most of them aren’t very good, but I absolutely love the Herdez bowls! I have not tried this one yet since I haven’t seen it at the stores I’ve been to, but the pork bowl and the chicken chipotle bowl are very good. They have great flavor.

  9. I just had the Pork Chile Colorado bowl, which has pork in a red chile sauce and refried beans. It was–for a frozen dinner–quite good! I never had one of these Herdez dinners before, but it was on sale at Kroger for $2.50. For that price, it’s definitely worth the money. (The regular price is $4.) I sometimes get the jarred Herdez sauces, which are also pretty good IMO.

  10. $3.50 is too much to pay for what is no more than a bowl of rice. It was located in the “snack” section of the frozen food. It’s not even enough to call a snack. Where was the meat?
