REVIEW: Nabisco Limited Edition Red Velvet Oreo Cookies

Nabisco Limited Edition Red Velvet Oreo Cookies

Red velvet cake is a dessert with cocoa undertones, cream cheese frosting, and has enough red food coloring to make the Kool-Aid Man bust through the wall of a bakery and say, “Oh no!”

Red velvet cake has seen a significant rise in popularity among companies that don’t make actual red velvet cakes. With each Valentine’s season there have been more and more red velvet-flavored products. There have been red velvet (Insert products here, I’m pretty sure they exist). It’s gotten to the point when St. Valentine’s Day should also be known as Red Velvetine’s Day. One of the products you can buy this season to celebrate Red Velvetine’s Day is the Limited Edition Red Velvet Oreo Cookies.

After opening its package, I was greeted with a sweet and tangy, but slightly weird aroma. As I inhaled more, I could get more of the cocoa notes and it was as this point I thought, “This is probably what a red velvet Yankee Candle smells like.”

Nabisco Limited Edition Red Velvet Oreo Cookies Package

I love the look of these cookies. Nabisco pumped enough Red 40 dye into the cookie dough to turn the iconic chocolate Oreo wafer from dark brown to this luxurious dark red. It’s the first new Oreo color and flavor since the Golden Oreo. Sandwiched between the two red cookies is an off-white cream cheese-flavored creme, and on the edges of the creme are crumbs from the cookie. I’m not sure if the crumbs were intentional or the result of being transported thousands of miles, but it does add to the looks of these cookies.

As I mentioned before, the red chocolate cookies are not just a different color than the standard Oreo chocolate cookie, they also have a different flavor. The red Oreo wafer has a more subdued cocoa flavor and doesn’t have the slight bitterness the original Oreo wafer has.

Nabisco Limited Edition Red Velvet Oreo Cookies Topless

With its sweetness and tanginess, the cream cheese-flavored creme does a good job of emulating red velvet cake’s cream cheese frosting. But, at times, while licking the creme, I could’ve sworn the cream cheese-flavor morphed into an artificial butter flavor. So if you’re an obsessive Oreo creme licker, you have been warned. But when I eat a cookie whole, I don’t notice any artificial butter flavor.

I really like the Limited Edition Red Velvet Oreo Cookies, but I don’t love them enough that I would buy a package every year, if they’re brought back. But they do a very good job at imitating the flavors (and colors) of a red velvet cake, and if you’re a fan of red velvet cake, I think these will bring you happiness.

Disclosure: I received a free Limited Edition Red Velvet Oreo Cookies sample from Nabisco. Receiving a free sample did not influence my review. I was not monetarily compensated for this review and you should not trust blogs that are monetarily compensated for reviews.

Item: Nabisco Limited Edition Red Velvet Oreo Cookies
Purchased Price: FREE
Size: 10.7 oz.
Purchased at: Received from Nabisco
Rating: 7 out of 10
Pros: Very good job at imitating the flavors and colors of a red velvet cake. Red wafers lack the slight bitterness regular Oreo wafers have. New cookie flavor and color.
Cons: Package is 10.7 oz instead of the 12.2 ounces with other limited edition Oreo. At times, when being licked, the creme might taste like artificial butter flavoring. Some might think it’s not too different in flavor from regular Oreo cookies. Not shaped like hearts.

  1. I bought these yesterday and must say these are great! They taste like a better version of an oreo(somehow) but with a slight cream cheese frosting flavor as you eat them.

  2. I must have broken taste buds. I can’t tell the difference between a Red Velvet Cake and a Vanilla Cake. They taste the same to me. What’s the appeal.

    1. It’s a very faint cocoa flavor to the cake. If done right it’s delicious. If done wrong it just tastes like your spooning cream cheese frosting in your mouth.

    2. Your taste buds are extremely broken. A Red Velvet cake has Dutch Cocoa powder in it. So it should taste like a chocolate cake.

      1. cream cheeese and that red stuff is red velvet.. im sure theres some coca but this is by no means red velte. open your eyes

  3. has anyone else experienced some er… gastrointestinal distress after eating these? true, i ate quite a few, but not enough to have stomach issues like im having 🙁

also i found that some cookies the red velvet taste was strong, others… not as much

  4. watever.. oreo did a bad job.. what consuates a good review is being honest and i know from this theres nothing but sale flavor… it just doesnt work…. takes one review to let me what i neeed to see and dont want to have.. oreos have done good in the past but ya know wat? theres a another brand.. keeeblers red velvet.. sadly those r gone too. y cant oroe just gt it right.. it may look good but if it doesnt taste like it then thats just it…oh well

  5. These are amazing. They taste a lot like red velvet cake to me. I would buy these all year long if they weren’t limited edition.

  6. I sampled one of these at the grocery store today…I loved these! They are a bit sweet but overall, I thought they were fantastic!

  7. I bought for packs cause my wife loves red velvet. I ate about 8 and for the past four days i have been sick a hell. every 5 to 15 mins i have been running hopelessly to the washroom. My step son says his stomach has also been upset along with his son who is 3. My daughter ate some and she also complained abouthaving an upst stomach. My wife also said it bothered her also. they were very very sweet. I have always love oreos and loved the peanut butter reeses flavor. But this flavor i thik they need to discontinue and I’ll see what the docyor say tomorrow.

  8. I bought a pack of these yesterday as a treat for my family, we each had about 4 of them during the drive home. My wife was the first to notice the her stomach started to hurt, then my daughter and then me. 24 hours later and I am still not right. There dosen’t seem to be anthin too unseal in these but boy they do not go down like regular Oreo.

Just the thought of them makes me sick, this could be the end of a life long love affair!

  9. Don’t know what some of these people are talking about. Nobody in my 4 family has had any adverse reactions to them and it’s been about a week. There isn’t anything in the ingredients out of the ordinary for cookies like this that I could see giving anyone food poisoning. None of us consume Oreo’s regularly and we get a slight Red Velvet taste from these. Nothing mind blowing, but they’re decent.

  10. My family likes oreos pretty well but these are gross. The cookie is ok but the “cream cheese” flavored creme is so nasty. It is gritty and so super sweet. Not at all like red velvet. Would never buy again.

    1. I was WAITING for a review like this. We were on vacation and my son bought a bunch of different Oreo flavors to taste for fun. Most were really good! This Red Velvet cookie was hideous. The worst. Even with the young kids in the family, it was ‘one and done’. No sickness or anything, just a super sweet, super artificial flavor.

  11. I had TWO red velvet oreos then i started feeling sick and my stomach was upset. Ran to the restroom and immediately started throwing up. Will never repurchase or eat again !!!! FUCK

  12. This is all I have to say to Nabisco and the people who made the cookies… they are fabulous. I am not a person who eats alot of sweets, quite frankly speaking, if I eat half of a candy bar or two or three M&M’s a week that satisfies my hunger for sweets. A couple of years ago I tasted a red velvet cake and have to say it was very good. Last week a friend of mine dropped off a package of Oreo red velvet cookies. Normally I wouldn’t have tasted them but for the fact that I do like red velvet cake. Well I have to say they were great and I ate more than I would normally eat any sweet cookie or dessert of any kind. The flavor was right on, you nailed the taste of the red velvet cake in the wafer and the cream cheese filling added something special in the frosting which was refreshing. If this cookie doesn’t make it on the shelf I for one will be disappointed. I have bought Oreo cookies for my kids in the past and they have enjoyed them but these new red velvet cookies I will be buying for myself. By the way I am 63 years old and have tasted your cookies my entire lifetime but the red velvet cookies have surpassed all that I have tasted, good job Nabisco!!

  13. Thoroughly loved these cookies…Nice flavor and textures.
Hope they come into production, on a regular basis…

  14. The closest I got to these as a display that had been restocked with regular Oreos.

  15. I had about 6. Woke up the next morning and vomited. It was bright red just like those cookies. What’s the deal???

  16. I ate 5 of those red velvet cookies and ended up in the er I was going diarea and I thought it was blood hada workup and they said it wasn’t blood. What a scarei think u guys need to lay my er bill

  17. I love the red velvet Oreos. Would buy them on a regular basis if sold all year round. I am not sick from eating the cookies.

  18. My husband and I just bought the Red Velvet Oreos. They were amazing! They taste just like a red velvet cake. No. I’m not being paid or compensated in any way. No stomach upset or any of that nonsense. So , I would suggest those who experienced this, it was actually something else that caused the problem. You know you’re not supposed to eat the whole box in one sitting, right?
