FAST FOOD NEWS: Sonic Croissant Dogs

Sonic Croissant Dogs

Update: We reviewed it! Click here to read our Bacon Double Cheddar review.

Sonic Drive-In is now offering hot dogs in buttery croissant buns. Reader Brad sent in this photo from a Sonic location in Chicago.

Their new Croissant Dogs are available in two varieties:

Original – A hot dog topped with just mustard.

Bacon Double Cheddar – A dog topped with chopped bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, a cheddar cheese sauce, and spicy mustard.

It shouldn’t be surprising to see new buns from Sonic in June. In June 2013, the chain introduced their Pretzel Dogs. And, last June, it was their Cheesy Bread Dogs. So does anyone want to take a guess at what we’ll see in June 2016?

The Original has 380 calories, 22 grams of fat, 9 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams of trans fat, 35 milligrams of cholesterol, 1070 milligrams of sodium, 31 grams of carbohydrates, and 11 grams of protein.

The Bacon Double Cheddar has 510 calories, 34 grams of fat, 15 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams of trans fat, 55 milligrams of cholesterol, 1670 milligrams of sodium, 34 grams of carbohydrates, and 18 grams of protein.

  1. I had one last week and the bun looked no different than a normal one so I called someone out and she said that was what they were sent and swore it said croissant on the package. Hope she was just fibbing!

    1. I had the EXACT same experience as Sarah! Except in my case, when I spoke with one of the carhops, he said I was the second person that day to ask, and so he had checked with his manager just to be sure. Epicrossiant fail!

    2. I have the same problem at my local Sonic. The first time, I thought it was just a mistake. I went back the next day to try again and got the same bun. I asked for the manager and she said that is what corporate sends them. I informed her that it looks nothing like a croissant and it does not taste like a croissant. I also pointed out that it does not look like the pictures they are using to advertise the croissant buns and that is false advertising. She just shrugged her shoulders and said that’s what corporate sends them. When I filed a complaint on the website, it was just sent to the manager of that location who again blamed it on corporate, but corporate refers all complaints to the store manager.

  2. I had the Bacon Double Cheddar (sans mustard) last week and I agree the bun looks just like a regular hot dog bun, but it did taste like a croissant. The bun had a buttery flavor to it that was actually quite tasty, and a marked improvement over the flavor of a traditional bun.

  3. After a long morning at the zoo with my wife and 3 year old son, we decided to take a lunch break at the nearby Sonic. I saw the photo of the new Bacon Double Cheddar Croissant dog and thought to myself, “Self, that looks to be a mighty tasty hotdog.” I gave it a shot without even looking at the price. This proved to be a mistake. As to the appearance, I found it to appear only slightly different from a standard bun. It had a rougher outer crust and seemed to have a slightly more yellow color. For flavor I would say it was sorely disappointing. There was no spicy mustard and the bun itself was very bland (just like the regular bun). Since we had ordered so many individual items, I neglected to notice the price until my loving wife commented that the regular sized hotdog was so much more expensive than her Chili Cheese Coney.

I won’t buy one again and I’d rate the flavor at 5/10, the appearance at 6/10, and the overall value at 4/10.

  4. Oh Boy! Did I get screwed over on this one. This was unlike any Croissant that I have ever had. It was not light.
It was just like a dense hot dog bun. (the regular buns are softer).
    It was not flaky,
it was not buttery. It was bland.
Then I saw the price of $3.89. WTF.
So I called the manager and she said it was what it was. She nor her area supervisor like it and they were both very let down. It did not remotely look like the picture. YOU WERE WARNED! Stay away! Far Far Away.

  5. Wish I’d checked out the reviews FIRST. Like others have said..bun wasn’t anything like a croissant. The manager said it was their croissant bun. I lost $6 for the 2. They also forgot to put onions as requested

  6. Not at all what I expected! Not flakey or buttery tasting. My husband and I agree, we won’t order it again! Disappointed

  7. What ripoff! I saw the beautiful, mouth-watering photo of the “croissant” dog on the menu board at Sonic, and I ordered one, expecting what had been advertised. What a letdown. An ordinary bun (MAYBE slightly denser, but not much) with no golden color, not buttery-ness, and no flakiness, as you would get with a true croissant. The regular price of a dog was $1.99 but the “croissant” dog was $2.99 — a 50% increase in price for nothing more than a slightly thicker bun. I visit Sonic’s often, but I’ll never buy another “croissant” dog again — because it isn’t.

  8. I just tried the croissant dog tonight. I was on the road, took a bite, was so confused that I drove back to the store to make sure they gave me the right bun. The manager came out and confirmed that the bun was correct and he thought it was weird for a croissant, too.

  9. Has anyone received a real croissant bun? I just got home with a hot dog on a hot dog buns, with yellow mustard. I called the Sonic Customer Support to confirm what I received is what they are advertising 3 or 4 times during the evening news. I was put on hold for 4 minutes and then the agent confirmed what I received is what they are advertising! I think my next call will be to the Missouri Attorney General’s office! Consumers beware!

  10. Good to read I’m not the only one with this experience! I went on Monday and ordered two bacon cheddar croissant dogs and when I got them, It looked like a regular bun to me. I was hungry so I just ate it anyway. I really wanted to try the croissant dog so I went back today and ordered two more. Same thing. Last time I’ll be ordering those over priced hot dogs!

  11. I won’t be going back to sonic for a very long time, if ever, because the “croissant” dog left a bad taste in my mouth.
It tasted like price gouging and false advertising.

  12. After finding out the hard way these were nothing like whats advertised by the commercials and restaurant menu I found myself online to see if I was the only one that felt like I was played by Sonic? I think these should pulled for false advertising and a class action lawsuit in the form store credit to all customers who feel the same.

  13. Same as all the other comments. I got a regular hotdog and a croissant dog and upon pulling them out i had trouble recognising which one was the croissant dog. I figured it was the one with the slightly bigger bun. Tasted like a regular bun, overpaid by a dollar for a slightly bigger bun…. Looked nothing like the delicious menu item pictured. They should get in trouble for false advertising.

  14. Well, I too wished I would have read the reviews before getting screwed and I’m going to repeat nearly the same thing that all of you have mentioned before me. The commercials and signage show something golden, buttery, flaky and delicious. When I received it via the drive-thru, I honestly thought they had confused my order with a regular bun! So I pulled to the side and went to confirm with the manager. I got the “that’s what corporate sends us” spiel and then she further illustrated by showing me the regular bun. Amazing – a croissant that looks nothing like a croissant for a $1 more. I will say, she offered to take it back and give me something else but I was in a hurry to get to an appointment. Mistake…the bun wasn’t even fresh but very dry and tasted just like a regular non-descript bun and don’t you find that the dog is skimpy for a premium priced sandwich?
