McDonald’s Southern Style Chicken Sandwich

The McDonald’s Southern Style Chicken Sandwich is cute. I’m not talking Hello Kitty cute, I’m talking women being courteous and calling a dude’s wiener “cute,” instead of the term they’re thinking in their head, which is “small.” Just like those courteous women do when they get a glimpse of the “cute cock,” I giggled a little when I saw the latest chicken sandwich from McDonald’s. The sandwich is 3.5 inches in diameter and not very tall. When I first saw it, I thought to myself, “God, I could stick that whole thing in my mouth with ease.”

For years, I’ve been telling women while crying that it is not the size of the boat that matters, it is the motion of the ocean, but the McDonald’s Southern Style Chicken Sandwich made me realize that I am wrong. The sandwich consisted of seasoned, lightly breaded all white meat chicken with two pickles in between a buttery tasting bun. The chicken was surprisingly juicy the first time I had it, but wasn’t when I had another a few days later. It seemed like there was very little seasoning on the chicken, making its flavor quite bland and I thought overall it really tasted like a mediocre McChicken sandwich. I didn’t even notice the buttery bun, but the pickles did help with the flavor, although you can’t get a pickle in every bite. So maybe having a bigger pickle would help a lot.

The idea of the McDonald’s Southern Style Chicken Sandwich apparently comes from a Chick-Fil-A sandwich, which also has breaded chicken, a buttery bun, and pickles. Since I’m thousands of miles away from a Chick-Fil-A, I can’t make a comparison, but it does sound like McDonald’s ripped off the idea. But is copying something so bad? Without copying others I wouldn’t have a college degree, high school diploma, passed my SRAs, and gotten through playground pattycake competitions. But what is bad is doing a poor job of copying, which seems like what McDonald’s did with the Southern Style Chicken Sandwich.

(Editor’s Note: Thanks to TIB reader David for suggesting the McDonald’s Southern Style Chicken Sandwich. I would’ve reviewed it earlier, but last month I swore off all fast food in hopes of a slimmer waistline and the ability to run more than 100 yards without collapsing.)

Item: McDonald’s Southern Style Chicken Sandwich
Price: $5.29 (“Value” Meal)
Purchased at: McDonald’s
Rating: 4 out of 10
Pros: Cute. High in protein. Biting pickles. My pattycake skillz. Big pickles.
Cons: Small sandwich. Taste like a mediocre McChicken sandwich. Pricey for its size. High in sodium for something so small. The motion of the ocean doesn’t matter.

  1. I too do not mind companies copying each other (hell, I’d eat a Taco Bell Big Mac if it was convenient), but Chick-Fil-A’s is far superior in size, flavor, and Christian righteousness. My sandwich wasn’t anything memorable. I do, however, enjoy McDonalds’ blaxploitation commercials with the women talking about breading chicken in a brown paper bag. I imagine five men that look like Alan Thicke writing dialogue for that thing and laugh maniacally.

  2. Next time you are on the Mainland we need to get you to a Chick Fil A. They really are quite superior. The peanut oil, the spices, it all just comes together quite nicely.

Thanks for posting the sodium you know I love you & your cute cock so much for that.

  3. I agree with Aimee the chick – fil-a is way better. I thought this “southern style sandwich” tasted more like one big McChicken.

Unfortuantley that won’t stop me from getting one if they offer them for free with the purchase of a drink again.

  4. I haven’t bothered to try the sandwich. I have made the mistake of trying the Southern Style Chicken Biscuits for breakfast. I’m a regular eater of the Chick-Fil-A biscuits and this MCDonald’s thing is a vile, blasphemous abomination.
I’m obsessive compulsive and will typically eat all of anything I start to eat, but I threw the last quarter of one of these atrocities away. All grease and it tasted like a dried up rancid chicken.

  5. that doesn’t sound very good. the breakfast version is on a biscuit. maybe its better.

  6. I miss Chick Fil-A. I, too, live far from Chick Fil-A now, yet I purchased the McDonald’s new chicken sandwich because it really did remind me of the Chick Fil-A. The Chick Fil-A is better, but McDonald’s did an ok job with theirs. It doesn’t have enough spice to it, but I enjoyed it and I will probably get one again. The sandwich I got was quite moist and I asked for extra pickles, so I got pickle in every bite. 🙂

  7. …I can’t resist joining in on this love train. Chick-Fil-A is NNNNNG. and by that I mean AWESOME. The difference in the breading is definitely crucial, but likewise is the fact that Chick-Fil-A actually uses real chicken breast in their food. Not, like, processed, formed chicken- actual chicken breast. It is delicious, filling, and makes an incredible difference. I only tried the McDonald’s version because I had a free coupon.. and honestly, I have a second coupon which I haven’t even wanted to use because the sandwich was so thoroughly underwhelming. Sad fact!

  8. Ace – I’d love to see a “keepin’ it real” version of that commercial.

Aimee – Just to let you know…my cute cock…just as salty.

K.C. – I paid full price for mine. I think it retails for $2.99 here, but I’d rather get the $1 McChicken.

Rotten Arsenal – Chicken seems weird to eat for breakfast, unless you have a bucket of KFC sitting in the fridge and nothing else.

liz – According to the previous comment, the breakfast version isn’t any better. So I think I might skip it.

amy – I can get extra pickles!?! I’m going to start ordering my Big Macs with extra special sauce.

Jules – I say you give to second coupon to the homeless guy because homeless people will eat anything, including coupons.

  9. Maybe you could carry your own pickle with you to McDonalds next time, and slice off some extra slices to add to the sandwich. If anyone asks what you’re doing, you could tell them that you enjoy mutilating your pickle occasionally.

  10. The Chick-fil-a version is WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY better. The McD’s version is a lame attempt at a ripoff. The biscuit was so bad I refused to try the sandwich, even though I could get one free. On the biscuit version the chicken has weird spices, and the biscuit is nowhere near buttery enough. As a person who ate a Chick-fil-a chicken biscuit (+ a buttered biscuit) every morning for eight months (I was pregnant with twins–I got a hall pass), I can assure you that Chick-fil-a blows McD’s out of the water with a nuclear weapon in the Southern-style chicken arena. Give it up, Ronald.

  11. Chuck and Marvo.. thanks for the morning giggles, you guys really know how to jump start a girls day!. As for the sandwich, it sounds like one more reason for me to avoid MDs like an outbreak of herpes at the cathouse.

  12. The fact that McDonalds copied Chick-fil-A means that they actually do perceive them as a threat. Not everyone likes beef. Chicken is my favorite meat!

I did try the McFil-A and I although it was okay, it wasn’t as good. I suppose it is the next best thing if the real deal isn’t around.

  13. Just re-relocated to the South from Seattle b/c work contract ended… the first thing I did was go to get Chick-fil-A sandwiches. IMO, the honey-flavored breading and peanut oil for frying is what gives Chick-fil-A chicken its overwhelming yum appeal.
Chik’n Minis are the best: baby nuggets swaddled tenderly in buttery honey sweet mini parkerhouse rolls. Mmm mmm, betch!
And you can always get an overly sweet glass of fruit punch to wash that honey treacle goodness down with. Glucose bomb!
Fried boneless chicken is delicious any time of day, Marvo.

  14. Whew..glad to know that I’m not the only one who’s performance is overshadowed by, um..good looks. I’m a Mickey D’s whore and happy to say so, but this baby needs some doctorin’ up (much like my performance). Maybe braze this fillet in that sweet tea. Our local McSmacks still has shamrock shakes available believe it or not…and that’s a good thing right there.

  15. don’t know if these ads air nationwide, but i love how, in the northeast at least, McD’s advertises the “chicken for breakfast?!?” thing as a wholly original creation. tried both McD’s ripoffs w/ the free coupons. needless to say, really hoping that a Chick-fil-a opens up around here soon, chick-fil-a chicken biscuits are the world’s greatest hangover food (except on sundays).

  16. All this love for Chick-fil-a and no one mentions the sauce? I always get a nugget meal, with 2 polynesian and 2 honey mustard. Their sauce is so amazing…I may have to go tomorrow.

  17. I’ve been getting free coupons for this sandwich wiyh my credit card bills. maybe i’ll have to give it a try.

  18. marvo, extra pickles is key everywhere you go. i always ask for them wherever i get a sandwich. mcdonald’s was very nice and actually filled a little plastic sauce cup with pickles for me. dairy queen will wrap them in a piece of foil usually. their chicken sandwich isn’t bad, by the way.

  19. I was VERY disappointed in this. Having lived in Vegas for 8 years and not having chick-fil-a for that many years, i was really excited. Like most women, i was left wanting something better! DAMN you McDonald’s…you are nothing but a big tease!!!!

  20. Cute burger, my heinie. I’ve squeezed out cuter things between my lower cheeks. But it is a good looking bun.

  21. I just can’t get down with McDonald’s sandwiches. They need to stop trying. Give me some chicken nuggets and call it a day.

  22. @ Angel H
    Umm, what kind of squirts?

I won’t touch that thing. Usually I’m not to race sensitive, but for fucks sake they had might as well had said, “We’ll also include the Mc Watermelon in the super sized version!”.

  23. Luckinflux:

Oh, y’know the kind…”when you’re walking down the hall and you feel something fall”…

    That kind.

  24. I’ve gotten like 10 coupons for trying these for free. Amazon ships them with each order. Not bad, but tiny and way too expensive.

  25. This sandwich is terrible. They cook it in the same fryer oil as the Filet-O-Fish sandwich, so it tastes like fish. Very dissapointing. And they call it a “Southern Style Chicken Sandwich”, I don’t think so. I lived in the South for 20years and never had a chicken sandwich this bad. What a sorry attempt to immitate a popular Chick-Fil-A item.

  26. I too am on the Chick-Fil-A bandwagon! I would call them my favorite fast food restaurant, but their biscuits aren’t as good as Bojangles. I moved to CA last year from NC but I make sure to get a chicken sandwich every time I go back!

  27. Few reasons why Chick-Fil-A sucks:

    1. Just typing their name is obnoxious.
    2. Closed on Sundays.
    3. A bit expensive.

I acknowledge that they make a damn good chicken sandwich, though.
