REVIEW: Fiber One 80 Calories Honey Squares Cereal

Fiber One 80 Calories Honey Squares

Eating high-fiber cereal has turned me into a cranky old lady. I’m not a fan of Fiber One cereal as a brand, so I wasn’t exactly excited to try this new variety, Fiber One 80 Calories Honey Squares. To be frank, this breakfast item’s only drawing power is the fact that it’s 80 calories per serving. So now it helps you shit and keeps you fit. We are indeed living in a golden age.

The problem I have with this brand is simple: Contrary to the ads, I can actually taste the fiber in Fiber One cereals. With this particular version, I had taken my cue from the appearance of the little cereal squares and was expecting something more along the lines of Golden Grahams, but alas, it was healthier than that. Much, much healthier. Which means not as delicious.

Fiber One 80 Calories Honey Squares may slightly mimic the flavor of Golden Grahams in much smaller-sized pieces, however, it looks a lot better than it tastes. The texture is grainy, bordering on cardboard. However, there is a light sweetness that almost rescues it from the depths of blandness. But what did I expect? It says right on the box that each serving contains 40 percent of your daily value of fiber. They ain’t Frosted Flakes.

I shouldn’t complain. Eating hearty, fiber-rich cereal will prolong my life, but dagnabbit, I really don’t care for the weird after-taste. It seriously ruins the experience. The more I chomp on each crunchy piece, the faster the sweetness evaporates, and I’m left with a mouthful of flavorless ground-up wheat particles. Ugh. Not to mention the other thing this cereal does. You know what I’m talking about. I’ll just say this — If you need that much help eliminating waste from your body, you have some serious problems that no amount of eensy-weensy golden fiber squares will fix on their own. Just… go take a freaking walk or something every now and then. Drink some water and eat a goddamn vegetable. Sorry, poop talk also brings out the grouch in me.

Which brings me to another point… Is there truly a need for Fiber One cereal that’s under 80 calories? I mean, you certainly can’t eat more than one serving of the original kind, and this leaner version is no different. You won’t get away with packing away half the box in one sitting. Try eating more than one serving of this cereal and see how long you can go before you’re doubled over with stomach cramps as the 10+ grams of fiber scour their way through your intestinal tract, leaving everything in their wake as clean as a whistle.

Fun times. In the john. On the bright side, you’re certain to feel much lighter. Wheee! Dieting is so easy! Now get off my lawn.

Item: Fiber One 80 Calories Honey Squares Cereal
Price: $2.99 (on sale)
Size: 11.75 ounces
Purchased at: Pavilions
Rating: 4 out of 10
Pros: Chock-full of fiber. Shaped liked fun mini squares. Only 80 calories per serving. Slightly sweet with Golden Grahams-like flavor.
Cons: Cardboard-like texture. Cannot (and must not) capitalize on its low number of calories by eating more of it. Not as delicious as Golden Grahams. Cranky old ladies. Good for weight loss, but the first pounds you drop may be in the can.

  1. I hate the fake fiber taste. A gram or 2, sure it’s barely discernible, but these products that are nearly half chicory root or whatever else taste like ass – and leave your stomach in knots and/or your pants in ruins.

  2. I think this cereal is pretty good. However, despite the high fiber I always have to eat at least 2 servings to feel satisfied and I never get cramps from it.

  3. If I ever develop a product, I vow that “helps you shit and keeps you fit” will be the motto. Doesn’t matter what the product is.

    Nice review!

  4. I think that the average person picking up a box is not looking for constipation relief. Instead I think that they are health conscious and know that the average American does not get enough fiber.

  5. Am I the only one who likes Fiber one? Man, their bars are like candy at that one cereal with honey clusters is legit. I’ll gladly risk a day of farting for that shizat.

  6. It has been a long time since I was so sadly disappointed with a product. Healthy Cereal you say??? There is only 1g of protein… the same as the most sugar laden kids cereal. It has a sawdust texture when chewed and a very unpleasant artificial sweetner aftertaste. I will either return the box to the store of purchase of throw it away. You can’t get me to waste my carbs (I’m diabetic) on another bowl of this.

    1. I agree with MPK. I had a coupon for Fiber1, so I bought it. It is really dry (even with a lot of milk). And the leftover milk just tastes bad.

  7. I disagree with the review.
I bought it today, opened it before i left the store (for my 2 yr old to snack). I tried it and it tasted like Golden Grahms! I loved it so much i raved about it to a chick looking for cereal. Had a HINT of fiber taste, no sh?t it’s 50% of fiber in a bowl and only 3 or something grams of sugar (amazing btw). The carbs arent high at all, for what it is. My kid LOVED it, and he’s picky. Okay so if your fat and like doughnuts and eat that for breakfast and stuff like trix and captain crunch, (Um colourful sugar!!) it wont taste good. If you eat normal, it’ll be so sweet you’ll be getting another bowl. (It doesnt fill you up, with all that fiber i do wonder why).
With taste, texture, how long it can keep its form in the milk, crunch, cereal size, serving size, sugar, carbs, fiber, and ingredients in mind I give it 7/10. For a “commercial” brand 10/10. And i am picky!!

    1. How can you get over how dry it is? Even with a bowl of milk I feel parched. And it is sweet in such an unnatural way, so much so that I don’t even like drinking the leftover milk.

And I laugh that you insult others saying they eat sugary cereals, yet you yourself said you like the taste because it reminds you of said cereals.

    2. I SO agree. It tastes great for such low calories. I think America’s standards for food is WAY too high. For anybody who’s dieting, I think it’s a great cereal. And it will help you use the restroom very well. “Helps you shit and keeps you fit”

  8. I was looking for a ‘healthy’ snacking cereal.I’m eating it dry. Crunch is good. Fiber taste tolerable. The sucralose after taste is AWFUL!!! Will NOT be buying again.

  9. I just ate my first bowel. I noticed a funky after taste. Does the cereal make your ass feel like it’s on fire like the bars do?

  10. I loved this cereal!! I do admit to liking fiber-y cereals, but, this cereal had a very big similarity to golden grahams and way more sweet and flavorful as compared to other high fiber cereals. I would definitely buy again!!

  11. I don’t think I’ve ever reviewed any food, but Googled this cereal to see if anyone else had the problems I think it’s causing me.

First, I need lots of fiber just to be “normal.” All-Bran was a revelation to me years ago, then I switched to Fiber One about a decade ago, and a few weeks ago I picked up two boxes of the new 80-calorie kind. Slightly odd taste, but sweeter than the regular kind, nice little squares, and all that fiber for so few calories — loved it!

BUT… Oddly enough, since starting this cereal, I have become constipated and bizarrely bloated, to the point that I look 8 months pregnant, and I am not a fat person. I’ve been feeling exhausted, and also got a sore in my mouth and zits on my chin.

To be fair, some of this may be coincidence. Maybe I am fighting a virus or something. But the constipation and bloat are very unusual. I’ve resorted to taking laxatives and still no result — it’s freaking me out. Just today I wondered to myself what I’ve been doing differently since this began, and all I could think of was this cereal.

Maybe I have an allergy to it, I don’t know… But I’d be interested to know if others have experienced this extreme bloat and constipation as well. I have never had a belly like this since I was pregnant, and that was nearly 25 years ago!! It’s a nightmare!!!

  12. My family bought the Costco packs of these. I ate it cause there was nothing else to eat in the house…and I want to throw up!!! it’s absolutely grainy and the artificial sweeteners left a terrible aftertaste in my mouth. This cereal REEKS of artificial sweeteners. I will not be eating this cereal again!

  13. I liked it. The texture is a bit weird the first time trying, but after that, it’s fine. I thought it tasted like lightly sweetened french toast, or a whole grain bread, so the texture didn’t bother me at all. And it does stay crunchy much longer than I expected. I added cinnamon to the bowl, and saccharin for sweeter milk (the flavor of the milk alone isn’t quite sweet enough) so it’s more like cinnamon toast crunch.

  14. I bought this cereal and have tried it 3 times and each time I’ve come to like it less and less. Definitely has an aftertaste which is not very pleasing. Actually, I find the cereal to be a real turn off. I will be discarding the rest of the box. I have had other fiber cereals which have no aftertaste. I rather eat a fiber cereal that has 100 calories with better taste than to eat an 80 calorie fiber cereal that tastes disgusting. The extra 20 calories aren’t gonna make or break me.

  15. I don’t mind the fiber at all. At least it’s good for you. What I absolutely can’t stand is the sucralose and all other artificial sweeteners with their health risks and terrible aftertaste!

  16. WELL…THERE YOU HAVE IT. FIBER ONE PRODUCTS TASTE LIKE…..FIBER! LOL..BUT WHAT I DO TO JAZZ IT UP A BIT IS ADD A HANDFUL OF BERRIES OR ONE BANANA TO TAKE THE EDGE OFF THINGS..YOU KNOW, THE GRAINY TEXTURE AND TASTELESS TASTE. SOMETIMES I BLEND IT WITH VANILLA YOGURT OR GRIND THEM UP AND ADD IT TO A SHAKE JUST TO GET SOME FIBER IN MY DIET. I DO NOT THINK ITS HUMANLY POSSIBLE FOR SOMEONE TO EAT ANY FIBER ONE CEREALS WITHOUT HAVING TO PUT SOME SORT OF SPIN ON IT..

  17. This cereal has a weird after taste that gets worse with evey bite. Taste like a nasty dry protein bar. I ate half a bowl and threw the box in the trash.
