REVIEW: Burger King Sweet Potato Fries

Burger King Sweet Potato Fries

NOTE: We also reviewed Burger King’s Seasoned Sweet Potato Curly Fries. Click here for our review.

I’m not a fan of Burger King’s French fries because of their unnatural starchy coating and weak potato flavor, so I had low expectations for their new Sweet Potato Fries.

These sweet potato fries are part of Burger King’s new limited time only summer BBQ menu, which includes Texas and Carolina BBQ Whoppers and chicken sandwiches, frozen lemonades, a Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich, and a bacon sundae.

As interesting as a bacon sundae sounds, which has already been done by other places, I really do think these sweet potato fries are the most compelling item on the new menu because with their release Burger King becomes the first of the major fast food burger chains to offer sweet potato fries.

These fries have a beautiful orange color, which make them look as if they enjoy spray-on tanning or eating lots of carrots. They’re not thick like Burger King’s regular fries, in fact they’re noticeably flatter. These sweet potato fries are also not as erect as regular potato Burger King fries, instead most of them are quite limp.

That limpness probably makes you wonder about crispiness. When I comes to French fries, I don’t like to put limp ones in my mouth. Crispiness is what I want to put into my mouth, and these sweet potato fries are somewhat crispy. Now when I say, “somewhat” I mean the tips are crispy, but the rest of the fry, not so much.

Also, these sweet potato fries don’t have a very long crispy life. If you’re dining in, you’ll experience their crispiness. However, if you’re ordering from the drive-thru and you’re not one of those people who eat fries along the way to your destination, by the time you do eat some, you will be disappointed by how soggy the fries got.

After my drive home from Burger King, which Google Maps says takes eight minutes, the fries I purchased ended up soggy. Fortunately, I did eat some crispy fries since I’m one of those people who eats fries while driving.

Burger King Sweet Potato Fries Closeup

Even though they don’t have the crispiness staying power I would’ve liked, the Burger King Sweet Potato Fries are quite delectable. If you’ve had sweet potato fries before, you’ll know what these taste like. They have a wonderful sweet potato flavor that’s enhanced by the salt, although some fries were a bit too salty. When they’re fresh, they’re addictive. When they’ve been sitting in a car for eight minutes, they’re still good.

If you’re getting a combo meal, you can switch the regular fries with these sweet potato fries, but it will cost a little extra (I was told 30 cents). Also, while they were fine with ketchup, you really should ask for a container of BK’s Zesty sauce to dip your sweet potato fries into. You’ll thank me later.

Although they get limp quickly, I enjoyed BK’s new sweet potato fries significantly more than Burger King’s regular fries, and I hope they become a permanent addition to the menu.

    1. White Castle also has a cinnamon dip sauce that you can get with them that makes them incredible. Okay, enough talk about White Castle because now I want sliders and I want to get high. Doh!

    2. Burger King, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and probably another fast food burger chain I can’t think of = Major

      White Castle = Regional

      1. Dairy Queen also has sweet potato fries. Not regional, but not ‘major burger chain’ either. *shrug*

        1. Not all Dairy Queens have them, though. I’ve never seen them offered in any around me.

    3. I cannot understand why you cook your potatoes fries with salt, even in your promotional pictures the salt is so evident.

  1. It’s been about a year since I’ve gone to burger king (road trip) these might make me go back.

I hope you just got a limp batch.

  2. I think I am one of the few that really enjoy Burger King’s new fries. As for the rest of their menu I could take it or leave it. I am interested in their new salads, they don’t look too bad. Currently I am loyal to Wendy’s. Berry almond chicken salad with a baked potato FTW.

  3. I haven’t been to BK since they updated their menu, though I have tried the newish normal fries (I agree that they’re terrible). I always thought BK was the worst of all the fast food places we have around here. So I’m super surprised that I think these look pretty good. (I guess they’ve set the bar pretty low for themselves, though!)

    1. “These sweet potato fries are also not as erect as regular potato Burger King fries, instead most of them are limp. When I comes to French fries, I don’t like to put limp ones in my mouth.”

You do know you lost most of us when you started saying things like “erect” and “limp”… Then the whole “limp ones in my mouth” to boot. Really ought to work on your phraseology.

In defense of the sweet potato, all versions of sweet potato fries are “limp” because they’re more like a carrot than a potato so if you want to keep putting hard ones in your mouth stick to the regular starchy potato.

      1. Oh my goodness. Now that I read it again, using the words “erect” and “limp” totally makes it sound like I’m talking about sausages, like limp Vienna sausages and hard, erect salami. I’m so embarrassed using terms usually used to describe sausages to describe these sweet potato fries. I hope other people don’t think I’m talking about sausages.

  4. Wendy’s in the metro Atlanta area tested sweet potato fries last year. They were pretty good but I guess they never caught on.

  5. Unbelievable. I shall whine once again about “why doesnt BK in the UK or in Asia have such items? Enough of variants of the Mushroom Swiss / Waffle fries / Turkey Bacon Double already!

  6. The sweet potato fries are def yummy, even cold. An the zest sauce is awesome. It’s like a creamy horseradish sauce.

  7. Leave the salt off the fries. It should be optional. I don’t think that salt is needed. I have had them with brown sugar & that is so much better.

  8. I went to BK last night to try some of the Sweet Potato Fries (only reason I went there). I placed my order for one of the BBQ meals that came with the Sweet Potato Fries, even mentioned that I wanted the combo with the Sweet Potato Fries. I was disappointed when they gave me the regulare fries. I told the girl at the window and she turned to her manager and said she order Sweet Potato Fries. Manager came to window and I told him the meal I ordered was supposed to come with the Sweet Potato Fries. He said you have to ask for them to be switched. I said the meal is advertised to come with them. He said you have to ask for them to be switched. By this time I was angery and told him I would never come back to a BK. For the record I did ask for them when I ordered…I told the girl I wanted the BBQ Combo that came with the Sweet Potato Fries. How is that not requesting the fries? I won’t go back, never really been a fan of BK.

  9. Went for the sweet potato fries at BK tonight and they were HORRIBLE!!! They tasted burnt, were flat, tasteless and limp. I will never buy them again. We have a chain in Wisconsin called Culvers…going to try their sweet potato fries next!

  10. I like em!!! They’re only 3 bucks and they are awesome dipped in honey mustard!!! But they’re not really crispy but that’s okay I’m kinda addicted to them.lololol

  11. I wasn’t really a fan… it almost felt like they were normal potato fries, only they were colored with orange food coloring. Why do you need to add cinnamon and sugar onto the outside, otherwise? I think they’re pulling a fast one on us. I’d like to see proof of whether or not they’re actually made of real sweet potatoes. I buy them in the frozen food section of the grocery store all the time, and I make my own homemade, and both taste much better to me. I dip them in either ketchup or sour cream (mmmm)

  12. I love these. But what I don’t understand is why they want to add salt to sweet fries. When they add salt the sweetness goes away which contradicts the name. What I do is ask them to not add salt to them (at least mine), it is worth it to ask.
