NEWS: McDonald’s Testing Deluxe, Habanero Ranch, and Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder Varieties

IMG_0071

According to Burger Business, McDonald’s is testing three new Quarter Pounder varieties.

The Deluxe Quarter Pounder is made up of American cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, red onions, crinkle-cut pickles, mayonnaise, and mustard on top of a quarter pound beef patty. If all that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same toppings on the Angus Deluxe Third Pounder.

The Bacon & Cheese Quarter Pounder is also topped with the same ingredients found on its heavier Angus Third Pounder cousin — hickory-smoked bacon, American cheese, red onions, and crinkle-cut pickles.

The most intriguing and unique of the three test varieties is the Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder, which features a white cheddar cheese slice, hickory-smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, and a mild habanero ranch sauce.

Wait. What?

Mild habanero sauce?

Mild and habanero should not go together. Ugh. I was excited about this burger burning my mouth, but now that I know it’s not going to be as spicy hot as McDonald’s Hot Habanero sauce, I’m less thrilled about it.

The new Quarter Pounders are being tested in several Northern California markets, and according to Brand Eating, they’re also being offered in a few Ohio markets.

If you’ve tried any of the new Quarter Pounder varieties, let us know what you think of them in the comments.

    1. Pretty much sounds like it, although the Big-n-tasty had ‘slivered onions’ rather than red onions (and no cheese on the standard variety.) The big-n-tasty was awesome when it was on the $1 menu!

  1. I agree, Marvo. Habanero is having its image tarnished as “the next chipotle”. I dare anyone to eat a raw habanero pepper, or merely a slice of a raw habanero pepper.

    Real habanero hurts bad twice.

    1. Habanero jack cheese would do it. Not that there’s any point to the cheese part. You don’t actually taste the cheese before the heat takes over.

  2. BRING BACK THE McDLT !!!!!! Put it in a cardboard box if the styrofoam one gives them issues. Geeze, that was a good burger. Should never have been discontinued.

  3. They are all going to taste the same so why bother.

Oh yeah, the reason to bother is to sell more Quarter Pounders.

  4. I think any fast food burger joint would be well served to offer a very, very spicy burger. You’ll bring in people just see if they can take it, kids will post it on YouTube, word of mouth advertising, etc.

One thing I’d LOVE McDonald’s to do. Have you guys ever had the steak bagel for breakfast? The sauce they use is basically liquid crack, and the fried onions are good too. Put the “steak” patty on a bun, top with cheese, fried onions, that sauce, and maybe a tomato slice. I’m going to get there at 10:28am, order the bagel sammich and a QP to make one myself.

To contradict myself, their menu is too big already. They don’t even list the regular hamburgers or cheeseburgers on the menu anymore. Get rid of Quarter Pounders altogether. Sell the small ones and the Angus ones.

  5. Hi, I live in Sacramento, CA and it seems they’re releasing these burgers and getting rid of all 3 Angus burgers the entire Sacramento area. I’ve had the chance to try all 3 versions and in fact right now McDonald’s is selling them for $1 each. The lines area getting pretty packed so atleast the McDonald’s in Woodland, CA has made a limit of 2 per costumer. Here’s my take on the three…

Habanero Ranch – The habanero sauce is a lot spicier than I’d expected as I thought it’d be dulled down by some sort of sweetness (like fast food restaurants do with chipolte) but my tongue actually started to burn a little and it has a very great taste to it. The bacon is higher quality than I’ve seen McDonald’s put on any of their *burgers* before, excluding chicken sandwiches and all the ingrediants combine to make a somewhat unique burger. (for McDonald’s anyways) I’ll be sure to buy it again.

Quarter pounder Deluxe – A pretty usual burger with all the standard ingredients, like a far superior version of McDonald’s new “daily double burger”. The whole time I was eating it I was thinking to myself, “Did it REALLY take then this long to come up with this?” The tomatoes and all those other ingredients combine very well with the quarter pounder patty. I’ll buy it again, probably as a double.

Quarter pounder Bacon & Cheese – Blah. Possibly worse than the angus version. It has a lower quality of bacon on it than the habanero ranch burger, it’s loaded with onions (I love onions but this was absurd) and COMPLETELY doused in ketchup! Mostly all I tasted was ketchup and onions, I hardly recall tasting *anything* else. In fact I stopped eating it halfway through to post this. Of course I finished it cause I was hungry… Will not buy again.

Overall I think these new burgers are superior to the angus burgers. Though, the only time I go to McDonald’s is to get a double quarter pounder so I’m already a fan of that. One of the biggest differences these burgers have over the angus burgers is the bread. The angus burgers had really thick bread and it’s taste took over so much of the burger. While the new quarter pounders have bread much like McDonald’s chicken sandwiches, soft and with nuts?

Anyway, you guys said you wanted a review since you’re not in the area. So here’s mine.

    1. Interesting… Here’s hoping they ditch the entire Angus Burger line nationwide. Never liked any of them. By “nuts”, I think you mean sesame seeds???… Anyway, I STILL think they need to bring back the McDLT, in an eco-friendlier cardboard box though. Also bring back the Arch Deluxe, Grilled Chicken Flatbread Sandwich, and Chicken Fajita.
