SPOTTED ON SHELVES – 4/22/2014

Here are some interesting new and limited edition products found on store shelves by us and your fellow readers. If you’ve tried any of the products, share your thoughts about them in the comments.

Brach's Celebration Candy Corn

Of course Brach’s would offer red, white, and blue candy corn for the Fourth of July. I hope Brach’s makes white candy corn for Labor Day. (Spotted by Nick at Price Chopper.)

Johnsonville Butcher Shop Style

Can someone explain to me what “butcher shop style” means. Also, what the hell is a Swisswurst? (Spotted by Nicolas at Walmart.)

Chef Boyardee Good To Go Mac & Cheese Snack Kit

Chef Boyardee Good To Go Beef Ravioli Snack Kit

Chef Boyardee Good To Go Beefaroni Snack Kit

I wonder if there was someone at Chef Boyardee who decided a Snack Pack chocolate pudding goes great with Beefaroni and Mac & Cheese, but not Beef Ravioli. (Spotted by Lauren at Winn Dixie.)

Banquet Quick Fries

These Banquet Quick Fries are worthy of a microwaveable tray, but the fries in regular Banquet frozen meals will remain limp, depressing, soggy strips of once-fried potatoes that turn smiles into grimaces. (Spotted by Michael at Schnucks.)

  1. SwissWurst A Bratwurst with Swiss Cheese.

I guess they are using the Butcher Shop name to try differentiate the flavor brands they have.

  2. The chef boyaradee kit looks nasty! Are they trying to do a knock-off on lunchables?! The kit looks boring and nothing exciting and unhealthy. Pudding, granola bar, and full of chemicals chef-Boyardee?! ENOUGH!

  3. I am all for the introduction of 4th of July products. Something needs to fill the gap between Easter and Halloween seasonal candy.

  4. Okay, so Chef Boyardee is trying to compete with Lunchables… with a product that requires microwaving? (I checked the product site. You’re supposed to nuke the Beefaroni.) Do elementary school urchins line up at the classroom microwave these days?

I am soooo betting that the kids whose parents buy this product then eat the Beefaroni un-nuked. (There’s no reason not to, other than that it’d be lukewarm. It’s fully cooked.)

Also, the prospect of shelf-stable pudding frightens me. I can only assume that Con Agra’s pledge to stop trying to make Chef Boyardee something it’s not meant they’d stop it with the claims of being an especially nutritious or responsible thing to feed the urchins.

  5. I wonder if the Brachs candy is for Memorial Day since that comes sooner than the 4th of July. Then again, I’m sure the candy lasts long enough till the 4th anyway.

  6. Heh, wonder if those “patriotic” Brach’s candy corn are made in Mexico like so many of their other lovely products.

  7. I’ve been looking for the Brachs candy everywhere! It’s hard to even find regular candy corn, let alone this stuff! Most stores are telling me they only stock it for Halloween :/ I like all things blueberry though so I hope I do eventually find it in Ohio!
