QUICK REVIEW: Rockstar Revolt Killer Citrus Energy Drink

For years I’ve wanted a caffeinated 7Up or Sprite. YEARS.

But despite my best efforts, which included whining under my breath to a cooler that was filled with 7Up and Sprite and begging on their Facebook pages, I haven’t had the chance to guzzle a clear lemon-lime soda with my favorite stimulant.

But that’s no longer the case thanks to Rockstar Energy and its new Revolt Killer Citrus.

Update: I forgot 7Up had dnL.

A 16-ounce can has 240 milligrams of caffeine, which, if my math is correct, is 240 milligrams more than 7Up and Sprite combined. The heart-thumping beverage doesn’t taste exactly like either big brand soda, but it does have a crisp and clean lemon-lime flavor that could easily be mistaken for a store brand soda with a name like Sprittee or 7Lemon.

I’m not sure why the can has camouflage, but I also don’t know why folks who aren’t hunters or in the military wear camouflage. Maybe it is meant for hunters and the “killer” in Killer Citrus, represents what hunters do to their prey. Also, if I had to wait all day for some deer or bird to show up, I’d need something to keep me awake too.

Also, I’m trying to figure out why it’s called “Revolt.” The word could mean rising up against something or it could mean feeling disgust. I mean, the beverage doesn’t make me feel disgusted, but why give it a name that could mean that? I dunno.

Overall, thank goodness for Rockstar’s Revolt Killer Citrus Energy Drink. Because now I don’t need to put in more than the 0.5 percent of effort I was making to help make a caffeinated lemon-lime soft drink a reality.

  1. Marvo- in order to avoid losing your Junk Food Reviewer license over this incident, you must write three riveting reviews of broccoli, emphasizing its potential use in typical junk food eating situations.

I suggest you start with Mann’s Broccoli Clovers, since they actually are tasty and in convenient junk food form even though the ingredients are just broccoli. They’re transverse cross sectional cuts of the stem after the hard covering is cut off so they can be used raw as crackers with toppings if you don’t want to just scarf them down plain like chips. (Yes, they are scarfable.) Same as Mann uses in its broccoli slaw, which also can count toward your license renewal requirements. Broccoli slaw minus dressing makes good finger food also, or it can be dipped.

You are also allowed to review broccoli soup (Imagine Foods has a nice one) but Larry’s cheese and broccoli mashed potatoes (which go on sale for $1 sometimes) with tiny microscopic bits of broccoli added in an attempt to qualify as “healthy food” does not count. Freeze dried broccoli, however, will fulfill the obligation, especially if you munch on it from a bowl while watching tv.

  2. Wasn’t dnL more of a grapefruitish thing? It had a pretty distinct flavor from 7-up or Sprite. As said above, Storm was the simple caffinated lemon-lime product of the past.

  3. Did you ever get to try Storm? It was Pepsi’s caffeinated version of Slice.

    1. This is what happens when I reply without reading all of the comments.

  4. Killer Citrus has a really nasty aftertaste. Maybe that’s why 7-UP is not caffeinated. It DOES NOT taste like a store brand of a citrus soda. It’s vile!

    1. Extremely vile. I just bought it for the first time last night and yuck!!! Has a really bad chemical aftertaste. Now I know why Monster is more expensive than the rest. They don’t make a single bad drink. I like NOS the best. A lot of the Rockstar drinks have a bad aftertaste.

  5. This tasted like Sprite. It didn’t too sweet. The aftertaste was okay.

  6. This stuff is alright. It has a real neutral lime soda type flavor, I usually pound two of them during work. Top-performer last month, but that’s because I’m awesome. (I work with 4-5 people online at a time). Do NOT take this if you’re taking pseudo ephedrine (sinus medicine). I had some weird chest discomfort that turned out to be nothing, but still was scary enough to warrant a visit to the ER.

  7. I’m thinking it’s called “Revolt” because it’s almost twice as caffeinated as regular rockstar (240mg vs 160mg). So maybe it’s like a Re-Volt (like double lightning bolts) OR it’s just like, the amount of caffeine is aggressive and encouraging of an uproar… or both. My 2¢

  8. For me, the revolt is short for “revolting”. The “creamy” aftertaste is awful; I’ve tried both the citrus and grape flavors this morning, and find that the over-sweetened nature of these drinks is HORRIBLE.

Ace-k, Sucralose, AND sugar? Seriously? Is the mix otherwise that bad?

    Would not buy again..

  9. KI’ll er CI trust is the best tasting energy drank out there. I have cleaned out every store in my town. Unfortunately none of the stores have restocked it so I can’t buy it anymore???

  10. Has anyone noticed over the last month or so it changed from a mountain dew-ish type to a more orange-y flavor? This used to be my go-to night shift drink, but now I’m highly disappointed because something has changed!
