REVIEW: Monster Energy Mutant Super Sodas

Monster Mutant Super Sodas

I wonder if internally at Monster Energy Headquarters, which I imagine is a radioactive green building with giant ramps on its sides that allow action sports stars to jump over the building, they called their new Super Sodas, Monster Dew.

In the world of radioactive colored sodas, Mountain Dew is far and away the most popular, and probably the most radioactive colored. So I understand why Monster decided to go after Mountain Dew’s marketshare. It could be successful or it could end up like Coca-Cola’s Surge, discontinued until a rabid following helps bring it back in limited markets

The new soda line is available in two varieties — Original and Red Dawn. If you Dew the Dew, you probably figured out Red Dawn is Monster’s version of Mountain Dew’s cherry-flavored Code Red.

The green one is good, but it’s slightly different than Mountain Dew. To be more exact it tastes like it’s missing something. And that something is orange juice concentrate. The lack of it leans the soda more into lime territory. You might think Monster decided not to use it in case Pepsi decided to Mountain Sue them, but that’s unlikely because Red Dawn has it.

While the Hulk green Monster Super Soda kind of tastes like original Dew, Red Dawn tastes exactly like Mountain Dew Code Red. If you secretly replaced my stash of it with Monster’s version, I don’t think I’d be able to tell. And if you did that, how dare you sneak into my home and you will be getting a bill for all the locks I have to change.

They have the same amount of calories and slightly less sugar than Mountain Dew. But the number many of you care about when it comes to radioactive colored sodas is the caffeine amount. While 20 ounces of Dew has 91 milligrams of caffeine, a 20-ounce bottle of Monster Super Soda has 115 milligrams. I think that’s a difference most drinkers won’t notice. And that’s a number without Monster’s proprietary energy blend, which if used would’ve upped the caffeine content significantly, but the bitterness from it might’ve made the beverage taste more like Mountain Ew than Mountain Dew.

Another significant number was the price. At my local 7-Eleven, the Monster Super Soda was $2.29, while a 20-ounce bottle of Mountain Dew was $1.89. So they taste similar and have slightly more caffeine, but are more expensive.

The two are fine Mountain Dew alternatives, but, for me, price negates the fact they have slightly more caffeine. If they were the same price, I’d definitely pick them up more often.

Purchased Price: $2.29
Size: 20 oz bottles
Purchased at: 7-Eleven
Rating: 7 out of 10
Pros: Fine Mtn Dew alternatives. Red Dawn tastes like Code Red. Slightly more caffeine than Mtn Dew.
Cons: Pricer than Mtn Dew. Why does Red Dawn have orange juice concentrate, but the green one doesn’t? Using Mountain Sue and Mountain Ew in a review.

*Because I live on a rock in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, things are a bit pricier here. You’ll probably pay less than I did.

  1. Leaving a comment just to say, they’re just as pricey here in the mainland. $1.99 each at local 7/11s

  2. This may be my go to drink now that Mountain Dew game fuel has decided to add sucralose! The Red Dawn mutant to me tastes very similar to the original Citrus Cherry game fuel and almost as good!

    1. The green one I got had sucralose, but it wasn’t very noticable at all. Idk if the red dawn has sucralose. But yeah, I’m pissed they put sucralose into game fuel.

  3. First time trying. Bought at Valero’s and paid 1.99 and bought the green one. Out of 10 I give an easy 7.5 but price comes down I’d be whilling to do an 8.5

    1. There’s nothing in it to cause that other than what’s in any other high caffeine soda. Either you’re a caffeine sensitive pansy, a paid shill, or you need to go see a doctor.

      1. The old saying of,”if it ain’t broke ,don’t fix it”, goes a long way in all these energy drinks !!the fact that Amps”Lightning “lemonade that went away for some unknown reason by all retailers and is still advertised by Walmart and Amazon as “Available “, is a farce. The taste and blend with that super energy “Kick”had been perfected ..now they new lines “Pipeline punch “,Khaotic” & Papillon”as energy juices , is on track to be as good or better then the Amp counterpart,so why tweak it? Why ??? What’s the gimmick?? To lose $$ and keep the advertisement game alive for no avail or possible reason in sight?? Please , as a big time Consumer if your product , don’t change it anymore !! I’m 50 and need this !! It is comparable to espresso “bustella “, and much better to taste and access !! It’s so good I thought of making a TikTok video about pipeline punch. They originally said pipeline was gunna be temporary, yet 6 years later I’d say it’s in top. If it had more exposure in USA ?? & ?? Canada, it would dominate the energy drink world. By far over Red Bull”, which has the sports and extreme game crowd fooled !!plus it gets the exposure!! Mix a pipeline juice or any of that lines flavors with vodka or white liquors and u have an instant hit that needs a millennials naming on it. Claim this your own millennials!!! Keep it alive!! Everyone I turn on to them gets all up in my own supply , so I know it’s the “fire” or energy drinks and not some concoction or notion I have made up in my head and taste buds of denial and justification of using Enerydrinks !! Please advocate for this juice !! I do ever chance I get !! Thank you for listening !!

  4. I wanna try one …I’m a mtdew drinker and green monster drinker where can I find one???

    1. Any of the general dollars or local stores and gas stations!! Costco /Sams club / Walmart all have deals in them and are 2 for $4 or 3 for $5 ..there is a incentive card and every 10 you buy you get one free at the holiday franchise has stations and stores!! Best to you and happy holidays!! These go well also with all mixed drinks !!?

  5. Bought 2 green ones. One for myself and one for a friend. It tasted pretty good, but for the 1.99/each I paid I could have gotten 2 liters of Mountain Dew, or paid .20 more and just got a 16 oz monster.

  6. This drink is really good, I had one this morning and I loved it. Although I will have to add that it tastes nothing like Mountain Dew, maybe the Mountain dew Distortion that was in one of the flavor battles. I still love it though and will continue to get it.

  7. ok this isnt mtn dew. its monster’s take on an energy soda, so if your going to compare it to something compare to vault. and this isnt a review, its more of a comparison, throughout the whole “so called review” you compared it with mtn dew and called it a mtn dew alternative, instead of reviewing it as its own thing.
