REVIEW: Canada Dry Ginger Ale and Lemonade

Canada Dry Ginger Ale and Lemonade

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always thought of ginger ale as a drink that skews toward the older demographic. I can’t say for sure because I don’t spend much time at skateparks or halfpipes, but I don’t imagine too many people under 21 grabbing an ice-cold ginger ale after doing some kind of extreme sport.

Even for the legally-able-to-drink-but-under-65 crowd, ginger ale is something that might be included in a fancy drink you order to impress a date, but not a beverage you imbibe on a regular basis.

On the other hand, lemonade is a drink for kids. Sure, adults will get a glass at an outrageously marked-up price from the neighborhood stand run by kids who always mess up the directions and either serve the strongest or weakest lemonade ever concocted. And yes, if you are of drinking age you’ve might’ve had lemonade with vodka. But if you are at a fancy dinner for a job interview — like at the type of place with tablecloths and metal utensils — chances are you are not ordering a lemonade (unless said interview is for a job at Country Time or Snapple).

So that brings us to Canada Dry Ginger Ale and Lemonade. As soft drinks go, it’s not very creative or wild. Soda flavors have proliferated over the past decade in a seemingly endless pursuit of the most extreme outcomes to the point where bacon-flavored drinks are passé. And this Canada Dry offering certainly isn’t a fancy craft soda using dragon fruit, passionfruit or other variation of fruit that I’m not certain truly exists.

Canada Dry Ginger Ale and Lemonade 2

It’s just ginger ale and lemonade, but it’s surprising this combination of flavors is really satisfying and refreshing.

The aroma is barely existent, with a faint smell of ginger ale and no lemon at all, and the color is more translucent than you might expect. But the flavor is where this drink shines, as it should. You do have to focus a little to pick out the separate ginger ale and lemonade flavors, as they meld into almost a mellow Mountain Dew-like taste with a bit less citrus kick and a touch less carbonation. Further research confirms that this also makes an excellent mixer with vodka or other spirits.

The label touts that it’s made “from real ginger and real juice,” but before you get ready to count a glass as a daily serving of fruit, take notice that it contains a whopping 1 percent lemon juice. For the mathematically-challenged, included is a visual aid showing 12 ounces of the drink with the amount of lemon juice it actually contains (about 3.5 milliliters). A juice drink this is not.

I guess this would be easy to make yourself by mixing ginger ale and lemonade, but why go to that trouble when the good folks at Canada Dry have already found the right flavor combination that is surprisingly good.

    1. Love your regular GingerAle but the added Lemonade taste and appearance were awful! Tasted like dishwater! Was very disappointed! Try mixing your GingerAle with flavored Gatorades! THE BEST and refreshing too! Take it from a person who had stomach and bowel surgery in the past and thrives on your GingerAle!

  1. I found a small 7.5 oz can at the grocery store. I enjoyed it but it could do without the Artificial Coloring and HFCS. It would probably be easier to buy some regular Sugar Cane Ginger Ale and add some Lemonade.

  2. Tried this the other day and absolutely loved it. For some reason it tasted like the ginger part was far more crisp and not as muddled as it is in the regular Canada Dry.

  3. Is this store or region specific? I’ve searched everywhere since seeing it here a few weeks back on Spotted in Stores but I haven’t found it anywhere.

  4. I’ve been looking for this since reading your review. Found it on Amazon Prime Now (in Nashville) for $1.99 for a 2 liter. I love it. I never really was a ginger ale fan, but like actual ginger. The combination with lemon really makes it work.

  5. Gross!! It’s like they used a really old tank lemonade mix and forgot the sugar…
Glad I only spent a dollar!
Wish they would bring back Canada Dry ginger ale and green tea!

  6. I tried it and the first taste reminded me of when my mom use pinesol to clean the floor. Not my favorite. I’ve been a Canada dry customer for a long time. Ginger ale should just be ginger ale.

  7. Could, you please make this drink diet or sugar free? I can’t wait to try it but I cannot have all the sugar… I’m certain it’s delightful!!!

  8. Wow! My husband just came home from the store with this “new” Canada Dry Ginger Ale Lemonade. This stuff is the Best….This will definitely will be served all summer with our Texas barbecue and cold cocktails. Can’t wait !

  9. So surprised that you choose to include sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate which cause so many allergy problems for so many people.

  10. Yuck. My Opinion , My Tastebuds are crying out WHY???
Started out refreshing, then a second and third sip brought out some very awful flavour.
I will stick to orange and mandarin canada dry club soda and regular ginger ale for now on. Nice try to introduce a new flavour, though making it a 10 pack is pretty slick on the marketing end of things as opposed to a 12 pack. I felt limited time and only 10 cans must be extra special. I was an extra sucker, fooled big L on forehead , next time I will try only 1 can or wait for a sample booth. . We don’t know until we try with new flavours and as previously mentioned the soda water orange mandarin is excellent. This stuff with artificial something leaves a very bad aftertaste and I feel like returning the product to the store. Unfortunately I am down to less then 5 as I had to have other people sample it to save them from a future purchase. Maybe some old fashioned medicine style mouthwash will get the bad taste out of my mouth.

Started out refreshing, on a hot day then a second and third sip brought out some very unpleasant flavour to me.

Unfortunately I am down to less then 5 as my wife and a couple friends tried and did not find the flavour to their enjoyment as well. Normally I am up to trying all the Canada dry flavours and usually I am quite impressed. This one is a miss for me but may work for others .

  12. I absolutely love your Ginger Ale and Lemonade. Love the flavor. Friends of my had little but they are diabetics. Hopefully you’ll come out with a diet version soon.

  13. I am shocked that Canada Dry isn’t advertising this product a little more. It is by far the best soda I have ever tasted and reminds me of the whisky sours we make each summer. I have served this sans alcohol and my guests think I am serving them a mixed drink. I hesitated to even comment as I don’t want to bring more attention to it and run out of this stuff locally! It is a huge hit!!!!

  14. Tried it for the first time yesterday, absolutely amazing drink. I love Canada Dry Ginger Ale but this blows it out of the water. A year ago I set out to find a ginger ale brand that equalled Canada Dry. The name escapes me but I found only one that was close.
So, great as Canada Dry is, the Ginger taste is a little muted and the drink a little syrupy. When I tried this one with the lemonade, what could I taste the most..the ginger, a sharp explosion of it on your tongue. Stronger than Canada dry, considerably so. I don’t really detect the lemonade much but this gave me what I always wanted. A strong sharp clean and dry burst of ginger, really flavourful. I hope this stays.

    Highly reccomended.

  15. You folks out there who have tried this Canada Dry with Ginger and Lemonade may be
missing something. If you read the ‘Nutrition Facts’ label on the bottle or can, there’s no ginger element or ingredient in the drink. What’s going on? I am a fan of ginger stuff, the reason I bought a liter. But it is surprising that they flaunt on something that is not in the drink. Is this just a typo or a fraud?

  16. This just appeared in the stores in Victoria BC this week. It is delicious. I love it. I am trying to find where I can buy it somewhere else as I got the last case at Walmart. I am worried that this will be like Schweppes Blood Orange which disappeared after two months. As for the above comments i am assuming they are from the East or the US. For the person who says ginger ale should taste like ginger ale why did you buy ginger ale that clearly says lemonade and ginger in it?
