\"Haagen-Dazs<\/a><\/p>\n

I just want to preface this review by telling you that I pronounce the word \u201cpea-can,\u201d and not the snooty, actual<\/i> pronunciation \u201cpuh-con.\u201d\u00a0I\u2019d be totally misrepresenting myself if I didn\u2019t let you know that up front. Clearly, I\u2019m not very cultured, so the idea of trying this new fancy pants ice cream flavor intrigues me…and kinda scares me.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s be real, despite Magnum\u2019s best attempts, H\u00e4agen-Dazs is our most pretentious ice cream brand.\u00a0What with their \u201clook at me\u201d umlaut and their \u201clook at me again\u201d hyphen. Their name doesn\u2019t even translate to anything, it just sounds Danish and important.\u00a0Now they\u2019re adding everyone\u2019s favorite buzzword \u201cArtisan\u201d to the mix?\u00a0We\u2019re talking \u201chigh-quality ingredients handmade by a worker in a skilled trade\u201d here people.<\/p>\n

Enter Spiced Pecan Turtle Ice Cream.<\/p>\n

\"Haagen-Dazs<\/a><\/p>\n

The base ice cream looks, smells and tastes like any run of the mill chocolate ice cream you\u2019re used to, so don\u2019t get your hopes up there.\u00a0The revelation you\u2019re looking for comes in the form of the featured chocolate, caramel, and pecan clusters. This is where you leave boring ol\u2019 chocolate ice cream behind, and enter a new world of perfectly textured spicy bites.<\/p>\n

Unlike some ice creams riddled with molar threatening chunks, the outer chocolate coating of each cluster acts as a barrier to somehow keep the inner pecan soft and fresh.\u00a0This was a welcome surprise and easily the best part of the ice cream for me. Size and appearance wise, they reminded me a lot of Buncha Crunch, just without a bunch of crunch. A crunch would actually ruin the experience.<\/p>\n

The clusters are also where spice flavor really pops. Said flavor is inspired by Christopher Elbow’s artisanal chocolate \u2013 fannnn-cy!\u00a0Apparently Mr. Elbow is very famous for peculiar chocolate creations and not his curveball as his name would suggest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Haagen-Dazs<\/a><\/p>\n

Turtles are an underrated flavor combination in my opinion (and an underrated animal for that matter) but I\u2019m not sure they needed a \u201cspice\u201d element.\u00a0The spice itself does have a little kick to it, which is an odd sensation to taste in an ice cream.\u00a0The aftertaste lingers in the back of your mouth after you chomp down on the clusters, and I wasn’t a fan.\u00a0 I got the hint of caramel, but only for a second before that weird heat took over.\u00a0I guess \u201csweet and spicy\u201d is trying to sneak its way into the niche market \u201csweet and salty\u201d has recently carved out.\u00a0I think it\u2019s gonna have a harder time catching on.<\/p>\n

Even after looking at all the ingredients, I\u2019m not positive what this mystery \u201cspice\u201d is.\u00a0 It could be cinnamon?\u00a0Maybe ginger?\u00a0This ice cream does taste a little \u201cgingerbready\u201d if you will.\u00a0Will you?\u00a0I know you won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Well then, let me do my due diligence and research Christopher Elbow a little more because this will bother me all day. After some digging, the spice(s) appears to be…ancho and chipotle peppers with some cinnamon to boot.\u00a0Well there it is, with the inclusion of \u201cchipotle\u201d we\u2019ve hit max buzzword capacity.\u00a0That explains the heat element.\u00a0Here\u2019s your chance to have peppers in your ice cream.\u00a0Color me intrigued.<\/p>\n

So is this worth trying?\u00a0I\u2019m gonna go ahead and say sure, give it a shot.\u00a0While it\u2019s basically just a strange spin on regular chocolate ice cream, it\u2019s unique enough to try for yourself.\u00a0Will I ever buy it again?\u00a0Probably not, but I\u2019m not mad that I did.\u00a0If nothing else, I felt important while I held this pint of H\u00e4agen-Dazs.\u00a0You shoulda seen the look the cute checkout girl gave me when I told her I only eat the finest artisanal ice creams. It was somewhere between \u201cWho cares\u201d and \u201cSecurity!\u201d<\/p>\n
