As I write this review from a prominently visible window seat at my obscure local coffee shop, I heave an exaggerated sigh and wipe my thick-framed, non-prescription glasses so that passerby will notice the towering pages of the novel manuscript that sit next to my vintage typewriter\u2014which I hauled all the way here from my fixed gear bicycle because modern day computers simply can\u2019t compete with the satisfying *clack<\/i>* of old keys.<\/p>\n

My novel is called (M)issed Connection<\/i>, and I wrote it to impress that cute girl sipping the Pumpkin Spice Latte across the room. What\u2019s that, you say? \u201cThat girl\u201d is just the Brown M&M mascot on a bag of Pumpkin Spice Latte M&M\u2019s?<\/p>\n

Hey, maybe \u201canthropomorphized, chocolate-filled oblate candy spheroid\u201d is my type. Or maybe I just want to eat her limited edition M&M\u2019s.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s right, Milk Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Latte M&M\u2019s are Mars\u2019 attempt to give a rejuvenating jolt to last year\u2019s lackluster <\/a>Pumpkin Spice M&M\u2019s. As a coffee snob, I\u2019m hoping there\u2019s a whole \u201clatte\u201d improvement between the two with the drink\u2019s name tacked on. But will it \u201cmocha\u201d difference? Now that I\u2019ve filled my bad coffee pun quota, let\u2019s find out.<\/p>\n

\"Pumpkin<\/a><\/p>\n

These M&M\u2019s are beefier than their normal counterparts, edging close to \u201ca dime on Viagra\u201d sized. The scent wafting from the bag reminds me of my \u201cPumpkin Splendor\u201d scented candle that I\u2019ve considered eating more times than I\u2019d like to admit. This is a good sign.<\/p>\n

I pop one into my mouth, chew, and then immediately shovel a whole handful into my gaping maw. Regardless of your religion\u2019s stance on the existence of the Great Pumpkin, you\u2019d better believe that these suckers are real -\u2014 real tasty, that is.<\/p>\n

\"Pumpkin<\/a><\/p>\n

Coming as a delightful surprise, they taste exactly<\/i> like a pumpkin spice latte in solid, shelled form. But what that means is that, like a real PSL, the coffee flavor in these M&M\u2019s is smothered by cream and sugar.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re expecting the strong, earthy, bitterness of espresso, you\u2019ll be disappointed. Instead, the coffee taste of the chocolate here is a sweet, lightly nutty java experience with faint caramel notes. Accompanied by a tinge of cocoa and a heaping helping of milk chocolate\u2019s dairy creaminess, it\u2019s akin to one of those bottled Starbucks Chocolate Mocha Frappuccinos. <\/p>\n

Unlike the burning aftertaste of last year\u2019s M&M\u2019s, the smooth pumpkin flavor here is seamlessly blended with the chocolate and hits fast. In terms of pumpkin spice\u2019s \u201cBig 5,\u201d these M&M\u2019s are heavy on the ginger and sweet cinnamon, light on the nutmeg, and nearly imperceptible in terms of cloves and allspice. This means the M&M\u2019s lack any of the pungent, sinus-clearing spice action you\u2019d get from opening your spice cabinet and huffing the jar of cloves (the things I do for this blog\u2026sheesh<\/i>). <\/p>\n

\"Pumpkin<\/a><\/p>\n

And that\u2019s good, because when people buy a PSL, we don\u2019t really<\/i> want bitterness, spiciness, or even authentic pumpkin-ness. We want the delicious, sugary equivalent of melted coffee ice cream blended with a hefty squirt of fake pumpkin liquid. And that\u2019s a pretty darn good way to summarize these M&M\u2019s. <\/p>\n

Sure, they taste synthetic and have a throat-coating syrupiness. And sure, you\u2019ll probably see some post on \u201cNatural Yoga Mama\u2019s Spirit Cleansing Mommy Blog\u201d about how artificial pumpkin flavorings are co-conspiring with aspartame to overthrow capitalism. But like any PSL, over-the-top fakeness is what makes these great!<\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re like me and enjoy \u201cbasic\u201d pumpkin spice lattes, you\u2019ll love<\/i> these M&M\u2019s. <\/p>\n

And if you don\u2019t? Well, I think I might have a can of Libby\u2019s Pumpkin you can jam a straw into.<\/p>\n
