\u201cIt\u2019s bigger than I thought it would be,\u201d my girlfriend said, starting down at my lap. But before you get any weird ideas, we were leaving the Wendy\u2019s drive thru, and she was referring to the new breakfast burrito I\u2019d recently procured. And to be fair, she was right.<\/p>\n
While Wendy\u2019s entry into the crowded world of breakfast burritos isn\u2019t necessarily akin to the infant-sized behemoth you might find on a working person\u2019s local food truck, it is close to twice the size of a McDonald\u2019s burrito, and maybe 25% larger than oh, say, Sonic\u2019s. (I\u2019ve never had a Burger King breakfast burrito, provided they sell one, and it\u2019s been a decade or more since I had Hardee\u2019s version, so I can\u2019t speak to that one, either.)<\/p>\n
Unlike its closest fast food competitors \u2014 and really, unlike most other breakfast burritos in general \u2014 Wendy\u2019s sets itself apart in a few ways. First, it\u2019s using two \u201cfresh cracked eggs.\u201d Think \u201cfried\u201d egg instead of the scrambled you typically find in most burritos. If you\u2019re into that sort of thing, you\u2019ll love this; personally, I found myself missing the consistent bite provided by the scrambled kind.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
Second, it\u2019s including its \u201cseasoned breakfast potatoes\u201d in the mix. If you haven\u2019t had the chain\u2019s answer to the standard hash brown, you might be pleasantly surprised. The right amount of seasoned, the right amount of externally crispy, and the right amount of internally fluffy, these wedge-like tubers fill up space within the burrito normally occupied by scrambled egg. Without them \u2014 due to the flat nature of the fried eggs \u2014 this burrito would be quite thin.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
And finally, Wendy\u2019s is setting itself apart by employing a \u201cSwiss cheese sauce.\u201d The idea of a Swiss cheese sauce is pretty intriguing, don\u2019t get me wrong, but I was hard-pressed to notice it in the mix. All I really noticed from a cheese perspective was the American. It did what American cheese always does \u2014 it got melty and gooey and served its purpose well.<\/p>\n
Same goes for the bacon. Wendy\u2019s uses \u201cApplewood smoked\u201d bacon, which are oven-baked. Wendy\u2019s bacon is pretty good, if you\u2019ve never had it. It comes across as less genetically engineered than McDonald\u2019s, and thicker than Burger King\u2019s. Wendy\u2019s claims there are six strips in the burrito, but that wasn\u2019t my experience. Either their strips are an inch long or they\u2019re fudging the numbers, but I don\u2019t know that I believe mine had anything close to that number.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s also worth noting that Wendy\u2019s is including a Cholula hot sauce packet with your burrito. I\u2019m not normally a \u201chot\/taco\/picante sauce on my burrito\u201d kinda guy, but I tried it for the sake of science, and predictably, it didn\u2019t really do much to elevate my experience. If you\u2019re a Cholula on your breakfast burrito person, though, this is a thoughtful inclusion.<\/p>\n
While this burrito was fine, I\u2019d only eat one again if I found myself requiring a fast-food breakfast and there was nary a McDonald\u2019s in sight. It wasn\u2019t good enough to make me seek out another one, and when it comes to a new product, that\u2019s not exactly a ringing endorsement.<\/p>\n
