My local Dunkin\u2019 was giving out free samples of the new Churro donut the other day, so I pocketed one to eat later in the day. Ya know, because I didn\u2019t wanna spoil my supper.<\/p>\n
Alright, I lied, I grabbed three little baggies on my way out when they weren\u2019t looking. I know, you don\u2019t have to say it – I\u2019m what\u2019s wrong with society. Believe me, I fully expect to see a printed camera shot of me on the wall with the words, \u201cDo Not Serve This Slob,\u201d next time I get a coffee.<\/p>\n
Anyway, when it came time to sample said donut bites, two of them weren\u2019t donuts at all. They were little bites of the new Breakfast Empanadas \u2013 ice cold bites of a sausage, egg and cheese empanada.<\/p>\n
Serves me right, I guess… but ya know what? As gross as an empanada sitting in the car for five hours sounds, it wasn\u2019t bad. In fact, it was good enough to go back the next day and try one hot out of the (microwave) oven.<\/p>\n

The breakfast empanada consists of egg, cheese, and sausage paste baked inside a pastry shell. That\u2019s not the most appetizing description, but it\u2019s essentially what it is. The contents are like that of a Pillsbury Toaster Scramble, while the taste was similar to Dunkin\u2019s Omelet Bites<\/a>, just not as dry.<\/p>\n The crust is greasy and flakey but still quite enjoyable. I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s completely authentic to a traditional empanada, but maybe closer to a pot pie. It has a \u201csheen\u201d to it, like a knish from a Jewish deli. I actually think the crust may have been the best part.<\/p>\n The inside is fine but leaves a little to be desired. The flavors blend well, but it can\u2019t shake an underlying \u201ccheap\u201d taste that I don\u2019t think a lot of other Dunkin\u2019 foods have to this degree. I think it stems from the scrambled eggs that needed to be a little firmer. Some bites were so mushy they bordered on liquid and really relied on the crust to sop it up.<\/p>\n The sausage crumbles also didn\u2019t have much texture, but they still boasted one overwhelming spice I couldn\u2019t pinpoint. It made me think the empanada might\u2019ve needed a zesty sauce or salsa to counter it. If the middle wasn\u2019t an egg porridge, I\u2019d say the crust-to-filling ratio was too high, but I appreciated the empanada shell\u2019s role in this situation.<\/p>\n It\u2019s funny; the hot version wasn\u2019t much better than the cold. I should\u2019ve Goldilocks\u2019d it and waited about fifteen minutes, so it was just right.<\/p>\n In the grand scheme, this is probably a one or two-time purchase, but it\u2019s not surpassing the Wakeup Wraps<\/a> or Breakfast Tacos<\/a> for me.<\/p>\n Still, you know how the menu works. The empanada will probably be gone in a month, so it\u2019s worth a try. It\u2019s a pretty convenient and satisfying meal.
