As someone who is allergic to chocolate, I\u2019m used to cries of \u201cYou can\u2019t have that. There\u2019s chocolate in it!\u201d when I eat Reese\u2019s Pieces.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, that\u2019s a common misconception, but there actually isn\u2019t,\u201d I always inform my concerned companions. But, I can tell they never quite believe me, even when I point out the ingredients list on the packaging. As soon as I heard about Reese\u2019s new Filled Pretzels with peanut butter filling, I instinctively prepared myself for more of these conversations.<\/p>\n

Of course, I\u2019m happy that this is a new Reese\u2019s treat I can actually eat, but I can imagine it causing confusion in chocolate cravers, and I can\u2019t say I\u2019d blame them. After all, the name \u201cReese\u2019s\u201d is practically shorthand for \u201cchocolate plus peanut butter,\u201d so it\u2019s surprising that they\u2019d make something with only half of the iconic pairing\u2014especially in the form of a snack where it seems like chocolate would fit right in. Even though it\u2019s what allowed me to eat these, not incorporating chocolate feels like a misstep, which is only my first caveat about these pretzels.<\/p>\n
The second is that\u2026 they\u2019re just not that exciting. In addition to those mildly awkward Reese\u2019s Pieces memories, they also instantly reminded me of the similarly pouch-like peanut butter-filled pretzels from other brands my parents like to keep on hand for long car rides. I\u2019ve always found those pretzels okay but dry, their crackly exterior and dusty filling leaving me with an unpleasant urge to wash my mouth out, even though their flavor isn\u2019t so bad. As it turns out, Reese\u2019s take isn\u2019t very different.<\/p>\n

Since the pretzel is hollow to accommodate its filling (which is actually impressively robust for something so bite-size), it\u2019s extremely thin and crispy, closer to a pretzel crisp than your standard hearty fare. Despite being quite careful, my first small bite shattered the whole thing into about a billion brittle shards! I generally prefer a thicker pretzel, but fine, I can accept that that\u2019s not logistically possible in this format. At least the peanut butter makes up for it, right?<\/p>\n

Well, sort of. I wanted so badly for the peanut butter to be creamier, but alas, it\u2019s pretty powdery. It\u2019s probably not too different than what\u2019s in a Reese\u2019s Cup, but since there\u2019s a more concentrated amount here and the taste of the pretzel isn\u2019t rich enough to really complement it, the chalky texture is apparent, and therefore unsatisfying. The peanut butter also tastes noticeably sweet rather than nutty. It\u2019s not bad necessarily, but it\u2019s a tad jarring (I audibly said \u201cOHHHH, THAT EXPLAINS IT\u201d when I noticed powdered sugar was one of the ingredients).<\/p>\n
The saving grace for me is the salt. While I\u2019m usually a sweet over salty girl, here it compensates beautifully for the lackluster and slightly uncanny peanut butter, adding extra complexity and cravability. The plump shape also helps, as I never got tired of crunching dramatically into it (I\u2019d definitely recommend that over a more delicate nibbling approach, which would just get messy).<\/p>\n

These Reese\u2019s Filled Pretzels are certainly preferable to starving on a road trip, but ultimately, I\u2019d never choose them over a bowl of classic Reese\u2019s Pieces\u2014or even just regular old hard pretzels.<\/p>\n
