Chips Ahoy! has the right idea when it comes to inspiration because they\u2019re only inspired by one thing this holiday season \u2013 Cookie Butter!<\/p>\n
Some twenty years after the advent of pulverized Speculoos cookie spread, Chips Ahoy! is finally dipping its chips into the world of cookie butter with its new Chewy Chips Ahoy! Cookie Butter (Inspired.)<\/p>\n
If you\u2019re wondering what \u201cSpeculoos\u201d means, it\u2019s a portmanteau of the words \u201cspeculation\u201d and \u201clooky-loo.\u201d Perhaps it\u2019s best you stop being so nosy, you speculoos.<\/p>\n
Actually, speculoos are thin spiced Belgian wafers and the centerpiece of cookie butter. I apologize for calling you nosy.<\/p>\n
\u2026 but speaking of nosy \u2013 these Chips Ahoy! smell incredible!<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll be honest, Chips Ahoy! Cookies are a mixed bag for me, so I was a bit of a speculoo myself when I saw the folks at Mondelez tackling this flavor profile. The aroma instantly sold me. They smell like 25% gingerbread and 75% fresh pancakes. I\u2019ve been huffing the sleeve for days. It\u2019s getting weird.<\/p>\n
Taste begins at your schnoz, right? Surely these scent-sations must taste amazing?<\/p>\n
They taste pretty good, but dare I say uninspired?<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a nice random sweet cookie, but severely lacking cookie butter flavor.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure you\u2019re all familiar with Biscoff cookies and know what they taste like. They have what I just call a \u201cwinter spice\u201d flavor. It\u2019s that concoction of every spice in your Lazy Susan \u2013 cinnamon, clove, cardamom, nutmeg, etc. Maybe not all, but you know what I\u2019m saying. They\u2019re delicious. I\u2019m a big fan.<\/p>\n

These Chips Ahoy! are tasty but\u2026 lack taste. They\u2019re at most about 20% \u201ccookie butter.\u201d They don\u2019t claim to use Biscoff or any cookie similar, but they don\u2019t taste like \u2018em anyway. They\u2019re inspired by cookie butter in the same way this review I\u2019m \u201cwriting\u201d is technically inspired by the collective works of Bill Shakespeare.<\/p>\n

The fatal flaw here is in the namesake \u2013 the ahoy\u2026 no, wait, the chips. Cookie Butter flavored cookies shouldn\u2019t have chips, especially chips that are inexplicably white chocolate, I think? White chocolate inspired at least.<\/p>\n
The white chips taste fine, but they\u2019re unnecessary. There is a layer of inspiration in the middle of the cookie that has a little bit of a \u201cgingerbready\u201d flavor when isolated, but it\u2019s no match for the overpowering chips. I guess you just can\u2019t be Chips Ahoy! without chips, but then why do the white chips?<\/p>\n
It\u2019s weird \u2014 these don\u2019t taste like they should, or like anything, really, and I still like them.<\/p>\n

The best I can tell you is that the \u201choliday spice\u201d flavor is there, but extremely muted. No one on Earth would ever guess \u201ccookie butter\u201d in a blind taste test. They\u2019d probably say, \u201cuhhh, cookie. Cookie flavor? It tastes like a cookie.\u201d Did Chips Ahoy! just think cookie butter tasted like generic cookie?<\/p>\n
There just wasn\u2019t nearly enough inspiration with this flavor. The speculoos over at Chips Ahoy! should\u2019ve probably just stuck to what they know. That said, it\u2019s still a good cookie-tasting cookie.<\/p>\n
