Frankford KFC Colonel’s Favorite Jelly Beans Review

Jelly bean season is upon us, and the folks at Frankford Candy have given us the unholiest collaboration of Eastertide: Colonel’s Favorite Jelly Beans.

The colonel is Colonel Sanders—the KFC guy.

If you think that sounds terrible, you are correct. These jelly beans are not AI, but I wish they were.

The flavors are fried chicken, sweet corn (maybe we should call him Kernel Sanders?), and gravy. I didn’t expect these to be good, and yet even my low expectations remain unmet.

When I open the bag, I get a strong, off-putting savory smell. I often enjoy mixing savory and sweet (pineapple on pizza, Pumpkin Spice Cup Noodles), but this is not one of those times.

Even the beige color palette is unappetizing. The corn flavor is yellow, the gravy flavor is orange-yellow, and the fried chicken flavor is Caucasian skin with freckles. At least the texture is pretty typical for a jelly bean.

The flavors aren’t all that different from each other; they are all strong umami, savory flavors with a fruity sweetness. If I concentrate, the fried chicken flavor does make me imagine juicy meat inside a crispy batter, but that’s not something I want in a jelly bean. The corn bean has a very faint corn flavor; it’s the best (i.e., least disgusting) of the three. And I detect an onion note in the gravy bean.

Even after I have eaten them, a weird, unpleasant aftertaste lingers in my mouth. I think these are worse than the notorious turkey dinner candy corn.

Taste the KFC Rainbow

It is difficult to find anything to enjoy about these. So why am I rating them a 2 out of 10 instead of a 1 out of 10? Well, they’re not so repulsive that I need to spit them out. They’re close, but they’re not quite there. And also, I’m pretty sure they’re meant to be amusing and ridiculous, and they’re probably meant to be a little gross. In that way, they’re a roaring success.

Don’t put these in a plastic egg for the annual egg hunt unless you want to ruin a kid’s Easter.

UNSCIENTIFIC POLL: Which Discontinued Ben & Jerry’s Flavor Should Return?

Temporary Poster.

A few weeks ago, TIB reader Tommy and I were lamenting on how Ben & Jerry’s should bring back discontinued flavors in the comments for the post about Ben & Jerry’s new Sundae flavors. And that got me wondering which flavor would I want to be dug out of the company’s Flavor Graveyard. Is it a flavor I never got the change to try or one that I did try and miss dearly?

So I went down the rabbit hole known as The Impulsive Buy’s Ben & Jerry’s reviews, along with taking a detour to the Flavor Graveyard page on Ben & Jerry’s website and the Contact Us page on the site that allows you to request a flavor to come back via a loooooooooooong drop down list. After all that, I’ve narrowed it down to one flavor — Bob Marley’s One Love.

It debuted in 2017 and it featured banana ice cream with caramel and graham cracker swirls and fudge peace signs. Although, it was a limited batch, I could’ve sworn it was on shelves for over a year. If Ben & Jerry’s invented a time machine and went back to the year 2025, it could’ve released it for Bob Marley’s 80th birthday. Or, although it would be morbid, the company could re-release it this year for the 45th anniversary of his death. You know what? It doesn’t matter when. I just want it to happen.

Here’s what I wrote in my review of it:

Because I like to scrape away the top layer with my spoon after first opening a pint, I got only the ice cream and swirls for my first few spoonfuls. Just those three ingredients created a combination that made me sing, “We’re jammin’, we’re jammin’, and I hope you like jammin’ too.”

Being a fan of banana-flavored anything, I love the ice cream base. Its flavor is mild and it works well with the buttery caramel and graham cracker swirls. Actually, the gooey caramel, gritty graham cracker swirl, and creamy banana ice cream brought back memories of Magnolia Bakery’s Banana Pudding.

If you follow this site closely, you probably know I love banana-flavored products as much as four-year-olds love their stuffies, and I have said there needs to be more banana ice cream varieties in the freezer aisle. So Ben & Jerry’s One Love is the flavor that I want back.

I also asked a few others what flavors they think should make a comeback.

“I think I’d want to bring back the epicness that was Clusterfluff (aka What a Cluster). Peanut butter ice cream with caramel cluster pieces, marshmallow swirls, & peanut butter swirls. Texture, flavor, sweetness. It had it all and I loved every bite. It’s sad that we’ve gone over a decade without this great flavor.”

“The Ben & Jerry’s flavor I would bring back is Cinnamon Buns. It had caramel ice cream with cinnamon bun dough and a cinnamon streusel swirl. The flavor ran from 2008 to 2023, when it was replaced by Churray for Churros.

Cinnamon Buns was a perfect harmony of the ice cream, chewy dough pieces, and sticky swirl. It was one of the few Ben & Jerry’s flavors I bought on repeat, and I’m sure I’ve polished off a pint in one sitting by digging for more cinnamon bun dough and then hitting the bottom.

Its successor is good, but not stellar like Cinnamon Buns.”

“While 90% of my Ben & Jerry’s fandom has been spent firmly in the full fat full dairy part of its lineup, the elusive discontinued pint I think about the most comes from the early years of B&J’s Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert offerings: Caramel Almond Brittle. I’m not sure exactly when this came out but I first tried and reviewed it on my blog in 2018. It had an almond flavored almond milk base with salted caramel swirls and pieces of almond brittle.

There is no doubt that the B&J non-dairy base has improved over the years, but this one, which leaned into the nutty almond notes with a hefty dose of floral almond extract, really worked. The texture always seemed exceptionally smooth and the pints were always loaded with crunchy, buttery brittle and sticky salty sweet swirls of caramel.

It was one of those experiences where each time I would say out loud ‘I can’t believe this is vegan.’ I bought it whenever I came across it at the grocery store. It’s not a flavor for everyone but it was for me, and I miss it dearly. Especially when I would pop off the lid and get greeted by a huge pool of caramel akin to a premium $13 pint from Salt & Straw, which happened multiple times during its short-lived run.”

So what flavor(s) would you like to see Ben & Jerry’s bring back.

Cape Cod Limited Edition Lemon Herb Butter Potato Chips.

Keep it up, Cape Cod! I love it when it comes out with new flavors that I never see. Although, I just learned Cape Cod is owned by the Campbell’s Company, who also owns Kettle Brand Potato Chips. So maybe Cape Cod is getting neglected, while Kettle Brand gets all the love. (Spotted by Allison H at Harris Teeter.)
