REVIEW: Limited Edition Dunkaroos Orange Sherbet

Limited Edition Dunkaroos Vanilla Cookies Orange Sherbet Frosting Tray

What is it?

While orange creamsicle seems to be all the rage with candy and energy drink companies, 90s nostalgia titans General Mills chose a different spin for its take on a citrusy sweet treat. The new (ish) summertime limited edition Dunkaroos combine vanilla cookies with orange sherbet frosting.

How is it?

The re-release of Dunkaroos has been contentious. On the one hand, we got our ‘Roos back. On the other hand, the cookie’s shape and taste are different, so naturally, people got in their feelings about it. I, however, like to approach things glass (or frosting cup?) half-full style and really like the new thin and crispy circular “D” cookie. It’s admittedly a lot less fun than the kangaroo shape, but no less delicious. The cookie carries a wonderful butteriness akin to shortbread that’s slim and crumbly but not so much that it breaks when getting dunked —- functional, tasty, and not too sweet.

The orange sherbet frosting is perfection. It is quite sweet and full of zesty orange essence without going overboard. Its creamy consistency and sugary citrus-forward flavor do well to channel the experience of orange sherbet, which complements the buttery vanilla cookie well.

What makes this release even more exciting is that, as far as I can tell, this variety has never been done with Dunkaroos. The initial flavor of vanilla with rainbow sprinkle frosting is an all-time classic, followed up with chocolate frosting, which was predictable and good. While all of us 90s kids wish they’d bring back the cinnamon graham cookie, I love that the brand skipped over previous entries like chocolate chip and strawberry and went straight for something never done before, which bodes well for future creativity and new releases to come.

Conclusion:

Limited Edition Dunkaroos Vanilla Cookies Orange Sherbet Frosting Cookies

I will admit I’ve had an orange phase in the last year, so this is a profile that currently really appeals to me. But I wholeheartedly believe General Mills knocked it out of the park with its first seasonal release since the relaunch of the ‘Roos in 2020, and I’m excited to see what it might have up its sleeve for the Halloween and holiday seasons.

REVIEW: Chocolate Dunkaroos (2021)

Chocolate Dunkaroos 2021 Tray

Going to the grocery store has become a brightly colored nostalgia minefield. I don’t know if it’s always been this way, or I just notice stuff more now that I am in that marketing age range for nostalgic foods. It feels like every trip, I find something that makes me stare off into the distance, dramatically remembering my youth. This go around, I had my mini existential crisis at the checkout lane in my local Walmart. Tucked into the shelf amongst the other snacks sat a box of Chocolate Dunkaroos.

In a time when Healthy Choice diet foods seemed to reign supreme, Dunkaroos were the opposite. For those unfamiliar, they are individual packs of mini cookies that you dip into frosting. Yes, this was somehow an accepted snack for kids in the 90s. They first hit the shelves in 1990, but were discontinued in 2012 in the United States. They made their reappearance on shelves in May of 2020 with the original vanilla cookie and rainbow sprinkle vanilla frosting variety.

Since then, a slew of Dunkaroos branded products (including cereal and cookie dough) have come on the market. It only makes sense that they’d follow up the vanilla cookie/rainbow sprinkle vanilla frosting item with a vanilla cookie/chocolate frosting version. I was honestly disappointed to see they weren’t going to produce the chocolate frosting variety with graham cracker cookies. I’m sure it’s easier to stick with one cookie variety across the different frosting flavors, but I knew this would mean that the taste I remember from childhood wouldn’t be quite the same.

Chocolate Dunkaroos 2021 Dunk

Chocolate Dunkaroos are simplicity at its finest. The little “D” branded cookies have a mild vanilla flavor that becomes immediately lost under the chocolate frosting. They do walk a fine line between soft enough to not crumble, but hard enough to stand up to being dipped in frosting. The frosting was actually better than I expected. I had assumed it would be a cloyingly sweet chocolate flavor, but it turned out to be a rich, fudgy chocolate.

Chocolate Dunkaroos 2021 Sandwich

While the flavors didn’t strike that “nostalgia” chord, the act of eating them did. I still eat my Lunchables (yes, I still eat Lunchables) the same way I did as a kid, and I fell back into my routine with Dunkaroos. I’m usually a little sparing with the frosting in the beginning. But by the end, I am glopping it all over. I even made a little cookie sandwich. It was just a fun little moment to pause and enjoy.

I think, more than anything, that’s all I want from these throwback/rereleased/nostalgic treats: a moment to pause and enjoy. Even though it won’t send you back to the 90s, the Chocolate Dunkaroos are still a fun treat. How can you go wrong with dipping cookies into frosting and calling it a snack?

REVIEW: General Mills Dunkaroos Cereal

General Mills Dunkaroos Cereal 1

What is Dunkaroos Cereal?

Remember Dunkaroos – the 90s-era Lunchables, Dessert Edition? Yeah, yeah, they’re back – we know. And they’re cookie dough. Now they’re cereal – for those who weren’t already eating them for breakfast.

Dunkaroos cereal is a slight twist on Cookie Crisp cereal – the same form factor and around the same size – which makes sense since they’re both made by General Mills.

How is it?

The aroma in the bag was pure vanilla. Strong. They looked similar to the Birthday Cake Cookie Crisp limited edition cereal, but sprinklier. The colors of the Dunkaroos sprinkles were more intense and the pieces were absolutely doused in them. We were headed in the right direction!

General Mills Dunkaroos Cereal 3

I nibbled it dry – my favorite way. The biggest flavor was FROSTING! It captured that deeply sugary vanilla-with-a-hint-of-cream-cheese Dunkaroos frosting. I didn’t get any shortbread cookie flavor, which was disappointing, but I got over it. A sprinklific frosting cereal is a win – I won’t split hairs.

General Mills Dunkaroos Cereal 4

The flavor was maintained and the cereal physically held up well in milk, which I appreciated. I can’t abide breakfast foods that go bland and fall apart before making it to my mouth. I can barely function in the mornings and one of us has to hold it together. It’s gotta be you, cereal. Dunkaroos also scored well on the post-game milk analysis. It was a festive confetti-bomb in my bowl, and the milk had a tinge of light blue.

Anything else you need to know?

Kids can get a pop culture history lesson on the back of the box! Adults can feel like a history lesson! Yeah, we used disposable cameras in 1992. We had patience. It took weeks, or months, to use all that film and get it developed. By then, you had no memory of taking the photos at the top of the roll. The 90s slang quiz is depressing if you, like me, didn’t realize these phrases had gone out of fashion. There are few situations in life that “all that and a bag of chips” won’t work in.

Conclusion:

If you were in the Dunkaroos game for the shortbread, you might not like this cereal. But who was in it for the shortbread?? This cereal was all frosting and sprinkles – it cut to the chase. If you love/loved Dunkaroos, give it a try. Make the youngsters learn about rewinding video tapes – it’s a metaphor for common decency.
