REVIEW: Popeyes Chocolate Chip Cookie

Popeyes Chocolate Chip Cookie Wrapper

What is Popeyes Chocolate Chip Cookie?

As the smoke finally clears from the drawn-out and bloated chicken sandwich wars that it started, Popeyes has set its sight on something many of its competitors already offer — chocolate chip cookies. Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, and even KFC, all who were challenged by Popeyes’ titan of a chicken sandwich in 2019, have all offered cookies for years, and this time it’s Popeyes showing up fashionably late to the party.

How is it?

What set Popeyes’ chicken sandwich apart from the rest was its hand-breaded freshness. While I know it’s a fast food sandwich, it still felt like a step above the price point and an experience that lived up to and exceeded the hype.

Popeyes Chocolate Chip Cookie Top

It’s with that mindset that I was immediately let down when handed a chocolate chip cookie inside of a cellophane bag, clearly not baked on-site and far from fresh.

Popeyes Chocolate Chip Cookie Split

Maybe my expectations for Popeyes are too high, but this cookie tastes about as generic and nondescript as you can imagine. The base has a typical brown sugar and vanilla flavor with a less than desirable amount of semi-sweet chocolate chips throughout. It’s a bit dry and crumbly, not stale per se but a far cry from the soft and fresh texture of a place like Subway. This cookie isn’t awful, but for such a late entrant into the cookie space, it’s wholly unremarkable.

Anything else you need to know?

Popeyes Chocolate Chip Cookie Bottom

Did this cookie come from Safeway? Costco? KFC? If I didn’t walk into Popeyes and buy it with my own two hands, I would never be able to tell — it’s the definition of underwhelming and basic.

Conclusion:

For a chain that delivers an apple pie with a legitimately crispy crunchy fried outer shell and pulled off freshly fried chocolate-filled beignets, this cookie feels like the definition of an afterthought and not one worthy of capping off a meal that starts with Popeyes’ fantastic sandwich.

  1. Disappointing that they can’t even manage to put some cookie dough in an oven for 10 minutes . . . . 🙁

    1. Agreed. Although I wonder if this is due to limited oven spaces? Or heck fried cookies (not oreos but other cookies)

  2. Popeyes usually make amazing desserts but this was a letdown. I get it when hot pies are premade but they are fried and are so good. Heck they could had thrown in a cookie for the box meals.

Popeyes should had focused making something new. Like raspberry filled beignets or some kind of exciting pie flavor.

      1. OOOH! Sweet Potato Cookies could be done. Sweet Potato Pies with marshmallow filling. That would been so good!

        1. I was just trying to stay in the cookie theme. 😉 My first choice would be a McDonald’s-like baked/fried apple turnover, but made sweet potato, spiced up and complete with marshmallow 🙂

          1. They’ve done a pumpkin cream cheese pie seasonally before. Quite similar to what you’re describing so yeah, they should go for that!

  3. I also found this cookie to be sad. As soon as they passed it to me in a sealed plastic wrapped, I knew it would not be good. Wendy’s also has a new cookie and I found it to be pretty good (it appeared to have been made in-store).

    1. Wendy’s always good with the cookies. I was in the same mood as you when I got the sealed plastic wrapped cookie. I was like really? This what I spent $1.09 on this?! Wasn’t impressed. Popeyes needs to stick what they are good at. Fried pies & the chilled desserts. I liked the banana pudding parfait. Even I hate bananas but it was so good.

  4. KFC used to have cookies fresh. I remember when they had rows of cookies and they would put in paper sleeves. Now they give out wrapped cookies. WHY KFC?!

  5. Yeah…Popeyes should just follow their heart and stick with their already stellar and unique from other chain’s sweets offerings!

And agreed, they ignited the fast food fried chicken sandwich wars and shall always remain at the top.

  6. Didn’t Popeyes get bought out by BK? I was afraid the BK corporate treatment would affect them and it did. They were my fav for years, mainly because of those green beans that they now no longer have. Doesn’t surprise me at all that they’ve cut out the good desserts as well. Did a search, now they just bought Firehouse too. Dang!

    1. Holy crap…I had no idea about that! Gah…this is a disaster…I know that Popeyes is still fast food, and it was at least high(er) quality for what it is; and supremely reasonably priced. Flabbergasted, and I can’t wrap my head around this news, lol. What the heck is a burger chain doing mucking about in the fried chicken and sub realm!

    2. It could be. I hope that won’t cause it go down hill. I’m sad that Popeyes no longer sells the loaded chicken wrap. It was my fave and if you don’t know what was the wrap. It was tortilla, chicken tenders, and rice/beans wrapped up.

      1. In that case, I’m surprised it was your favorite, but I hate beans and flour tortillas, so… My favorite is their spicy chicken. Can’t be beat! 🙂
