REVIEW: Cheez-It Extra Toasty Cheddar Jack Crackers

What are they?

Intentionally overbaked Cheez-It crackers in a flavor that’s as divisive as the idea of slightly burning your snacks on purpose. People seem to either love the original Extra Toasty Cheez-It crackers or not understand why they exist. Similarly, the Cheddar Jack variety ranks higher than the original for many people, while others find it overly cheese-powdered and weird.

How are they?

Really tasty and just how they’re supposed to be. They live up to their extra toasty name with every square bronzed on both sides. It’s a carefully controlled browning and none of the crackers come close to tasting burnt. The cheddar jack flavor is assertive; it’s tangy but also smooth and very cheesy. The cheese powder seems less prominent on these as compared to the regular Cheddar Jack Cheez-It, so if that was a sticking (dusting?) point for you, these should be less offensive.

Anything else you need to know?

They have a bit of a “pizza-flavored snack” taste to them. The extra toasting reminds me of the browned spots on pizza cheese and the overall flavor has a familiarity with some pizza-flavored chips and crackers I’ve had before.

Conclusion:

They’re not going to become my favorite Cheez-It, but that being said, I couldn’t stop eating them and would buy them again. If you’re a fan of the regular Extra Toasty or Cheddar Jack flavors, I think you’ll love these. If you don’t have a strong opinion on Cheez-It crackers but appreciate salty, cheesy snacks, these are definitely worth a try.

  1. Ohhh, cool. So they’re doing this as a permanent flavor now?

I was able to try this and the two other exclusive flavors back when they had the Toasted collector’s edition on their website. It was definitely my favorite of the three, but I wouldn’t mind the other two (Tobasco, and I forget the other) coming back permanently too.

    1. I think the other flavor was “Extra Cheesy”. I didn’t get a chance to try them when they had those but I’m curious about the spicy ones!

  2. Ohhh, yes…must get my hands on these! We regularly have the original Extra Toasty Cheez-It variety in the pantry, and this version sounds super yummy.

Thanks, for the review, Erin! Going to have the husband look for them, tomorrow, at Jewel, when he goes for his weekly Saturday AM grocery run.

      1. Update:
Found them and tried them! And I found them to be…just okay. I was expecting them to be a bit zestier, if you will. Maybe it’s my fault for having inflated expectations. They tasted just like a hybrid of the Extra Toasty and Extra Cheesy – which, okay, makes some sense – except that, for me, anyway, “cheddar jack” makes me think of a slightly different flavor than just “cheddar”, which is what the Extra Cheesy are. Certainly not bad, mind you, and I’m definitely glad I was able to try them, but they won’t necessarily be a repeat purchase.

        1. Thanks for the update! To be honest when I heard these were coming out I had myself incorrectly convinced that it was a Pepper Jack flavor (so much so that when I finally found them I sifted through several boxes to see if any said Pepper instead of Cheddar) and was also expecting it to have more kick.

  3. I got some as part of a multipack of snack sized bags. I didn’t really care for them. Not sure why, I like toasted things.

  4. When I decide to eat carbs, my go to is always is always “Extra Toasty, Cheez-It”, Family Size. However, I recently bought a Family Size box that were labeled Extra Toasty, but the were like the original Cheez-Its! Very disappointed they were not even a little toasty! ? Bummer ?

  5. I am highly disappointed. Cheez-its are truly my favorite snack and the fact they added dust to the extra toasty isn’t something I can get behind.
