QUICK REVIEW: Milky Way Fudge Minis

Milky Way Fudge Minis

What is it?

A Milky Way with the usual chocolate malt nougat swapped out for chocolate fudge nougat. That’s about it.

Milky Way Fudge Minis 2

How is it?

These are delicious, much the same way a regular Milky Way is. The fudge nougat has a slightly more pronounced cocoa flavor and the texture is a hair denser, the effect of which is 10 percent more chocolateness – not a huge bump. If I was blindfolded and someone handed me these and said “Here’s a Milky Way,” I likely wouldn’t be able to tell it was different.

Milky Way Fudge Minis 3

These made me ask “why?” in a way no other product variation has. It’s too similar to the original. When I bite into a Milky Way Caramel Apple or Midnight, I’m getting a materially different experience. I would give a plain Milky Way a 9, but I’m deducting a point for lack of originality here. They taste good, but a variant should stand apart from the original.

Is there anything else I need to know?

The package makes a bold promise on the stretchiness of the caramel.

Milky Way Fudge Minis 4

I tried to recreate it, but only got this far:

Conclusion:

If you’re a Milky Way fan, just buy a Milky Way. The experience is so close, there’s kind of no point in these existing.

QUICK REVIEW: Peanut M&M’s Sweet & Salty Snack Mix

Peanut M M s Sweet Salty Snack Mix

What is it?

A mix of two types of M&M’s — peanut and peanut butter — with peanuts and pretzel balls. There’s also a milk chocolate version available with milk chocolate and Crispy M&M’s mixed with almonds and pretzel balls.

How is it?

Peanut M M s Sweet Salty Snack Mix 2

Solid, but unspectacular. Even though the pretzel balls are pictured sparingly on the outside of the bag, they seem to be the most populous of the residents inside the bag. The peanuts are a touch disappointing in that they are neither sweet nor salty.

It might have been better if they were salted or honey roasted; instead, they are just kind of there and don’t differentiate themselves from their brothers and sisters encapsulated in chocolate with a candy coating. Despite those shortcomings, the mix of the four components does accomplish the stated goal of being sweet and salty, and overall it makes for a tasty, satisfying snack.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Peanut M M s Sweet Salty Snack Mix 3

Using a trick perfected by potato chip industry, the bag is much larger than it really needs to be based on the contents inside. While the label proudly trumpets that it is “Sharing Size,” I’d advise using restraint before announcing to friends, family, or co-workers that you are indeed open to sharing a bag. The label says there are “about 8 servings,” but if you invite more than two others into your circle of sharing then no one is going to get much.

Conclusion:

There’s really nothing remarkable about this product, and it would be pretty easy to just create this mix yourself (even if you not a DJ).

With that said, I’ve never seen those little pretzel balls at the store and doing it yourself is never as easy as it looks. So if you like Peanut M&M’s, you’ll enjoy these even though they certainly won’t change your life.

QUICK REVIEW: Mtn Dew Berry Monsoon

Mtn Dew Berry Monsoon

What is it?

Mtn Dew Berry Monsoon is quite possibly the most exclusive soda in stores right now!

Oh, wait, I mean store.

That’s right because it’s available only at Sam’s Club — and, even then, only at the soda fountain. Luckily for me, I happen to be a member of The Club, so I grabbed a cup of this ultra-exclusive, berry lime-flavored soda during my last Sam’s run.

How is it?

Coming from someone that drinks enough Mtn Dew to have a lucrative Dew Nation Rewards account, pretty good! The berry flavor is definitely more prominent here, but the hint of lime provides a nice countenance for the fizz, which is a bit on the lighter side.

Mtn Dew Berry Monsoon 2

If you can imagine mixing together three-fourths of a cup of Mountain Berry Blast Powerade with one-fourth of a cup of 7Up, then you would get a pretty accurate representation of what Mtn Dew Berry Monsoon tastes like. You’d even replicate the color, which is nearly identical to that of Berry Powerade.

Is there anything else I need to know?

This stuff is a great deal if you have a Sam’s Club membership, or if you know someone with one that you’re able to drag along with you to get you in the door. I paid less than a dollar for my 24-ounce cup, and, yes, you can get refills. You’re probably going to want to because Berry Monsoon’s likeness to carbonated Powerade makes it particularly satisfying after shopping and hauling cases of chips and toilet paper around the store.

Conclusion:

If you shop at Sam’s Club, like Mountain Dew, and are looking for something a little lighter to quench your thirst over the summer, then I think that Mtn Dew Berry Monsoon is something you’ll enjoy! Hopefully, PepsiCo will incorporate this flavor into its regular selection, because I’ll be sad to see this one go.

REVIEW: Post Golden Oreo O’s Cereal

Post Golden Oreo O s Cereal

I’ve got to be honest, if/when Post’s Golden Oreo O’s Cereal gets discontinued, I don’t think there will the same upswell of support to bring it back like there was with the original Oreo O’s Cereal after it disappeared from shelves.

Because Oreo > Golden Oreo.

So no Bring Back Golden Oreo O’s Cereal Facebook pages to like that’ll cause your Facebook timeline to suddenly have more junk food and weight loss ads. And there won’t be folks who will buy boxes on eBay from sellers in South Korea.

But, even though I feel that way, it’s a decent breakfast cereal.

Post Golden Oreo O s Cereal 2

The round corn pieces with white sprinkles look like the bleached version of Oreo O’s Cereal. Taking a whiff of the cereal in the bag, it does remind me of the cookies, but its flavor makes me think of another cereal. I can’t put my tongue on what it is, but there’s a part of me that wants to believe it’s C-3PO’s Cereal. That’s probably not the case, and I’m sorry to anyone whose hopes I got up with the previous sentence.

Although I can’t figure out which cereal it’s similar to, its flavor is what I imagine the textbook taste definition of sweet corn-based breakfast cereal would be. It’s a combination of artificial vanilla, sugar, and the sweetness of corn.

Post’s Golden Oreo O’s tastes as much like Nabisco’s Golden Oreo as Post’s Oreo O’s tastes like Nabisco’s Oreo, which means not a whole lot. But I’m fine with that because I’ve been happily filling my bowl with it over the past few days, mindlessly munching on it as I try to figure out what frickin’ cereal it’s like. Some of the sweetness does wash off into the milk, so expect a treat when you slurp it up.

To be honest, much like my position with the cookies, Oreo O’s Cereal > Golden Oreo O’s Cereal. I’m not saying this belongs on a lower tier by any means, but I prefer the chocolate version. It comes in a family-sized box from Walmart, so if you hate it, although I imagine you won’t, it’ll last you for a while.

Pros: The textbook taste definition of sweet corn-based breakfast cereal. Smells like Golden Oreo Cookies in the bag. Sweetness washes off into milk.
Cons: Doesn’t taste Golden Oreo Cookies. Kind of generic cereal flavor. Probably not C-3P0’s Cereal. Can’t figure out what cereal it tastes like.

QUICK REVIEW: Krispy Kreme Blueberry Glaze Doughnut

Krispy Kreme Blueberry Glaze Doughnut

What is it?

The apparent runner-up to Krispy Kreme’s glaze-voting-contest-winner lemon – The Blueberry Glaze Doughnut. Once again KK’s iconic glaze conveyor belt of sickly sweet dreams gets transformed from the original wash of sugary vanilla to a brand new and seasonally appropriate blueberry.

How is it?

Out of the box, the doughnut carries the distinct aroma of one of my other favorite breakfast carb bombs – a blueberry bagel. Unlike a blueberry bagel, which always smells sweeter and more potent than the flavor it actually delivers, this doughnut comes through in a major way. The bright berry notes work perfectly with the doughy yeast base for a combination that is truly great and much tastier than it looks.

Krispy Kreme Blueberry Glaze Doughnut 2

The blueberry glaze is sweet yet sharp and highlights the golden fried exterior in a way that is often masked by the best-in-its-class original. It’s a gentle flavor that isn’t too over the top yet very present with the perfect ratio of fresh to decadent with the slightly tart blueberry helping to temper the sweeter OG recipe.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Krispy Kreme is known for its super fresh Hot Light doughnuts, but since these are only made once early in the day and I couldn’t make it until later, I had to recreate that magic at home with the microwave. Popping this berry boy into the micro for 6-8 seconds heightens the sweetness and creates a melty soft texture that’s everything conveyor dreams are made of.

Conclusion:

Krispy Kreme Blueberry Glaze Doughnut 3

It’s a damn good thing that KK decided to bring out this non-winning glaze for a week-long run because as good as the lemon was, this one is even better. It’s a more notable change to the original while still keeping everything that makes the OG so classic. The blueberry is the berry that’s made for breakfast, performing equally well in pancakes, muffins, oatmeal, and, you’d better believe, doughnuts.
