REVIEW: McDonald’s Cold Brew Frozen Coffee

McDonald s Cold Brew Frozen Coffee

Superman is Clark Kent without glasses and a suit.

McDonald’s Cold Brew Frozen Coffee is the Golden Arches’ Cold Brew Frappe without the whipped cream and chocolate drizzle.

While it’s hard to believe no one realizes Mr. Kent is the Man of Steel, it’s easy to see the Cold Brew Frozen Coffee is a Cup of Slush.

The fast food behemoth’s newest attempt to cool and caffeinate you at the same time is a combo of the chain’s new cold brew coffee Frappe base and ice that ends up looking like a chocolate shake. Sadly, McDonald’s isn’t offering a non-frozen version of the beverage. Although, if you wanted a less crystalline drink, you could buy this and let it melt in the summer sun.

With McDonald’s Frappe, the whipped topping, drizzle, and syrup in and on it create a coffee camouflage that does a great job at hiding from your taste buds the fact you’re drinking java.

McDonald s Cold Brew Frozen Coffee 2

This blended beverage is still sweet and creamy, like a Frappe, but without the added sugary ingredients, the coffee flavor stands out a bit more. The cold brew process creates a sweeter and smoother cup of joe than hot brewed, but it’s impossible to tell in this since it comes with a bunch of sugar and cream.

Although I didn’t try the Frappe version, this has the right level of dairy and sweetness for me. Whenever I order a Frappe or a Starbucks Frappuccino, there’s almost always a point when it gets too cloying and I don’t want to finish it (but I somehow find the strength to muscle through it). But with this, I sucked the whole thing through a straw without hesitation.

Okay, not completely without hesitation. There were moments when I had to pause due to brain freeze.

Because I like my McDonald’s java drinks to be sugary, creamy, and made with a proprietary coffee base, this is right up my caffeinated alley. So if you enjoy McDonald’s Frappe beverages, but wished there was something that tastes and looks less like a dessert, the Cold Brew Frozen Coffee might be for you.

Of course, if you have coffee running through your veins from a country I can’t find on a map, you will probably shun this delicious combo of cold, coffee, caffeine, cream, and sweet crystals.

Pros: A delicious combo of cold, coffee, caffeine, cream, and sweet crystals. Tasty way to get caffeinated. No whipped cream, syrup, or drizzle to mask the coffee’s flavor. Not cloying like a Frappe (but still sweet).
Cons: Hard to notice the nuances of cold brew coffee. Was so easy to drink that I got brain freeze. Unknown amount of caffeine. McDonald’s cold brew should also come in a non-frozen form.

  1. Went today and tried the frozen coffee while my wife got the frappe. For some reason the Frappe melted a lot quicker than the frozen coffee.

  2. I may have to try it for myself. I keep getting mixed feedback from some people on it. My cousin who loves all coffee was pretty disappointed in it.

    1. I, too, LOVE all coffee and I loved this! It was smooth, rich, creamy, and just sweet enough but had more of an upfront coffee flavoring to it. Personally I don’t order too many frappes because of the calories, but these cold brew blended coffees have less calories in comparison so it’s definitely something I’ll be buying more regularly! You have to try it!

  3. The frozen coffee is my new favorite. I love that you can taste the coffee. I usually drink Starbucks.

  4. well I go to McDonald’s and order a cold brew frappie taste almost like the mocha frappie love it so I am at another McDonald’s in another city and order a cold brew frappie turns that it is nothing like the one I ordered first time I am disappointed that this McDonald’s did not make it right and said it was the same as the other McDonald’s no I said it is not the same come to find out they said they did not make it right and apologized I know my frappie’ I have bought many of them in the past please see that your employee’s get trained the right way on how to do the new cold brew frappie’s

  5. There is nothing and I mean nothing to compare to the “frozen iced coffee”. I am so hooked on this drink. It has a great taste of coffee, not too sweet and frozen at the same time. I know MacDonald’s is taking Starbucks business away. Better prices and better quality.
And their hamburgers really are juicier.
I am just disappointed to see them replacing their employees with preorder robots. ??

  6. So disappointed today when I stopped to get a frozen coffee at the McDonalds in Columbia TN. They said “Oh we don’t have that anymore”. I drove away sad.

    1. Yes…I experienced the same disappointment in Middletown PA….had heard a week ago at Harrisburg McDonalds store that it was discontinued….went to another location for one…told them what other store had said….they seemed to not know about any plans to discontinue it & served me….I went for one today & learned they had discontinued it….said it was a limited edition item….I did not know that….I am greatly disappointed….have tried other similar drinks from your competitors….do not even come close…WHY WOULD YOU DISCONTINUE THIS GREAT ITEM???

  7. Everyone needs to call McDonald’s headquarters and request that they keep the “Cold brew frozen coffee” on their menu. Here is the number: 800-244-6227

When prompted answer, “something else” until you are transferred to a representative.

The rep I spoke with said lots of people are calling to request this product stay on the menu. So, please do your part and give them a call!
