REVIEW: Kellogg’s Raisin Bran Protein Cereal

You can't spell gains without Kellogg's Raisin Bran.

Kellogg’s Raisin Bran Protein Cereal has one gram less fiber and four grams more protein than Kellogg’s original Raisin Bran, and I know that off the top of my head. Why am I admitting to the least impressive flex ever? Because I have an Amazon Subscribe & Save subscription for regular Kellogg’s Raisin Bran, and since there are no puzzles on the back of the box for me to solve, all I have to read while eating the cereal is the nutrition facts.

The flakes in Raisin Bran Protein are thicker than the flakes in Raisin Bran.

If you LOVE the malty, bran-forward taste of Kellogg’s Raisin Bran, you might be disappointed with what this variation offers. It doesn’t taste like the original, just with added protein. Some might see that as an improvement, but I don’t. Even with a “touch of cinnamon,” which is an accurate description because it’s liiiiiiight, the flavor isn’t an upgrade. I notice the spice, but I wish this had a gentle rubdown of cinnamon rather than the whisper it currently offers.

It was easy to take this picture because I always have a box of Raisin Bran in my kitchen.

It also doesn’t feel like regular Raisin Bran. The flakes are closer in texture to those in Raisin Bran Crunch, which, again, some might see as an improvement because the thin flakes in the regular version go soggy quickly. They’re thicker, probably due to the soy protein isolate, and that thickness makes them more crunchy than crispy. So I guess the protein can help bulk up bran flakes as well as muscles.

What could use some bulking up is the flavor of the shriveled grapes, which are not as sweet as what’s in the original. This makes their taste less noticeable than what’s in regular Raisin Bran. Also, and maybe it’s just my box, there appear to be fewer than two scoops of them. A stronger cinnamon punch might’ve made up for the diminished raisins, but of course, that didn’t happen.

Other than the protein, this cereal is a lesser version of Kellogg’s original Raisin Bran. As a fan and regular eater of the classic, I thought this protein-enhanced version could eventually be my go-to when it comes to shriveled grapes and bran flakes. But its underwhelming cinnamon flavor and raisins delivered two scoops of disappointment.

REVIEW: Kellogg’s Blueberry Bran Crunch Cereal

I like Kellogg’s Raisin Bran. However, I suppose by the time you reach your 30s, that isn’t an entirely taboo thing to admit, but when I was younger, it felt like admitting math class was fun.

In pulling together my thoughts for this Kellogg’s Blueberry Bran Crunch Cereal review, I found myself trying to nail down what it is about the classic Raisin Bran that’s so enjoyable. I think it boils down to texture and flavor. The big, chewy, and sweet raisins offer an occasional texture change from the crunchy, slightly bitter bran flakes.

While this new cereal is an extension of the Raisin Bran Crunch line, the thought of a blueberry version of Raisin Bran was intriguing. It seems like blueberry or blueberry lemon-flavored items are popping up all around grocery shelves these days.

I prepped myself a bowl of the listed serving size, one cup of cereal with 3/4 cup of milk. There were visible oat clusters with little dehydrated blueberries, which definitely stood out more once the milk was added. There was also a very strong blueberry aroma.

The sweet bran flakes were just like those in classic Raisin Bran Crunch. They didn’t absorb the milk too quickly. The oat clusters were fairly underwhelming and offered almost no crunch. They had a very similar texture to the bran flakes and not much unique flavor, so they were sort of lost in the bite.

The stand-out flavor was the added natural blueberry. It was present in every single bite and made the milk taste like the aftertaste of a blueberry donut. It wasn’t a bad flavor by any means, but it was very one-note. I couldn’t discern the texture of a blueberry piece when I got them in a spoonful either. So, in the end, these could have been blueberry-flavored bran flakes, and the experience would have been the same. Just okay.

I’ll also note that the bag had a decent percentage of crumbs.

Overall, I appreciate the attempt to create a new spin on an existing cereal. But in the end, this is an example of heavy-handed flavor addition and freeze-dried fruit pieces that are likely super expensive and don’t add much to the experience. I’ll always root for blueberry-flavored items, but this one is a miss.

REVIEW: Kellogg’s Frosted Bran Cereal

Kellogg’s new Frosted Bran is made up of crunchy bran flakes with a perfect amount of sweetness. A part of me wishes it was called Frosted Flakes Bran with Tony the Tiger and the Sun giving each other a high five on the front of the box, with the tagline, “They’re gr-r-reat…for your digestive system.” What could’ve been!

Don’t let the sun smiling on the box fool you into thinking these are the exact same bran flakes found in Kellogg’s Raisin Bran because they aren’t. While they are not as frosted as those found in Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, there’s enough of a coating to make them sweeter and crunchier than what’s in a bowl of plain ol’ Raisin Bran.

But here’s the thing, it tastes like Kellogg’s took the sugary coating from the raisins and then put them on the bran flakes because the cereal is not sweeter than regular Raisin Bran and has the same fibrous flavors as the classic cereal minus the raisins. That sweet coating also prevents the flakes from getting soggy the instant they’re introduced to milk, which happens with regular bran flakes.

To be honest, there needs to be a Frosted Bran with Raisins because it would make eating Raisin Bran less annoying and more tasty. I’ve let out so many sighs when I end up with raisin-less spoonfuls of bran mush that I probably let out enough air to blow up balloons for a child’s birthday party.

As for nutritional differences between this and Kellogg’s Raisin Bran, a one-cup serving of this new cereal has 150 calories, 5 grams of fiber, and 10 grams of sugar. While a serving of the original has 190 calories, 7 grams of fiber, and 17 grams of sugar.

I’m surprised by how much I like Kellogg’s Frosted Bran, but I don’t know if I should be surprised. After all, I like Raisin Bran when I can secure at least one raisin on my spoon. It has the right amount of sweetness, and its sugary coating helps maintain a decent crunch. I wish it came in a bigger box, but overall, I think this cereal is gr-r-rand…for your digestive system.

REVIEW: Kellogg’s Raisin Bran Toasted Oats & Honey Cereal

Kellogg s Raisin Bran Toasted Oats Honey Cereal Box

When I was younger, I developed a fondness for Raisin Bran Crunch. It elevates Raisin Bran to a higher level and brings it closer to Honey Bunches of Oats. From both texture and taste standpoints, it was dramatically improved for me. With the release of Kellogg’s Raisin Bran Toasted Oats & Honey, I wondered if it would be in the same vein.

The box claims that the cereal consists of “Delicious raisins & toasted bran flakes sprinkled with hearty oats and honey.” Based on the box’s image, I knew to not expect the same crunch levels of Raisin Bran Crunch. It appeared to have single oats sprinkled on the flakes.

Upon pouring the cereal, I noticed there were even less oats than the box had led me to believe. There were tiny flecks of oats clinging to the flakes. It was difficult to even distinguish them as being oats.

I tried the cereal dry and it tasted how I expected based on the aesthetics. The bran flakes are slightly crunchier than usual, with a faint oat flavor. The honey is more noticeable and imparts a gentle sweetness on the flakes.

Adding milk allowed the cereal to come together. The honey flavor was significantly more prevalent and each bite was sweeter than those of traditional Raisin Bran. It did not taste like there was actual honey drizzled on the flakes, but it was distinctive enough to know what they were going for. The oats’ flavor remained understated, but they showcased an important feature in milk: they helped the flakes stay crunchy for much longer. This is definitely appreciated.

Kellogg s Raisin Bran Toasted Oats Honey Cereal Back

On the back of the box, there is a random image of a package of Raisin Bran Crunch. I am not sure why it is there, but it feels like Kellogg’s is taunting me. “We know this is what you really wanted,” it seems to say.

While not a radical departure from traditional Raisin Bran, this cereal is an upgrade on the tried-and-true formula. Given the choice, I would pick Kellogg’s Raisin Bran Toasted Oats & Honey over the original, without hesitation. If given yet another choice, I would choose Raisin Bran Crunch over both, every single time.

REVIEW: Kellogg’s Vanilla Almond Raisin Bran Crunch Cereal

Kellogg s Vanilla Almond Raisin Bran Crunch Cereal

What is Kellogg’s Vanilla Almond Raisin Bran Crunch Cereal?

The ol’ vet Raisin Bran has introduced a new flavor to its far superior “Crunch” line – Vanilla Almond Raisin Bran Crunch.

How is it?

Literally any addition to Raisin Bran – a workman-like cereal base – is a good thing, so vanilla and almond certainly fit the bill.

Here’s the deal though, they’re not enough to truly separate this from regular Raisin Bran.

Kellogg s Vanilla Almond Raisin Bran Crunch Cereal Milk

I couldn’t even tell where the soft vanilla was being piped in, but I think the bran flakes had a sweet coating, which would be a good call. We’re talking about a bran flake here. It’s basically medicine to help old people [redacted].

This is a food review!

Giving the flakes a little more flavor was the right move. The clusters however were severely lacking. I guess I expected hearty Honey Bunches of Oats-type chunks but only got sporadic bits. They should’ve just attached the little wooden almond shavings to the clusters and make them seem bigger, because this was a real cluster[redacted].

This is a family site!

I wish the raisins had a coating, but Raisins are raisins. They’ve always been a nice textural counterbalance to the flakes, so expect no different.

Is there anything else you need to know?

They skimp on everything except flakes. Granted, the scoops of raisins probably sunk to the bottom of my box, but for this bowl I reviewed, I didn’t get a good ratio. I bet the last bowl will be 75% raisins.

I coulda used some artificial almond flavor if I’m being honest. A nice little “amaretto” punch would have improved this cereal a lot.

Conclusion:

Look, Raisin Bran is a decent start to the day. It’s fulfilling. It’s “healthy,” but it’s still just a step above oatmeal on the Boring Breakfast Scale™.

This is just ok, but probably a good alternative to the barrage of new cereals that seem like they were created by Pixie Stick-addled 6th graders.
