REVIEW: Limited Edition Peeps Oreo Cookies

Limited Edition Peeps Oreo Cookies

Goodbye red velvet and strange emoticon hearts!

Hello hoppy bunnies and pastel pallets!

As if there weren’t more Peeps flavors popping up than a rabbit’s litter in heat, this year Nabisco is gifting us the collaboration I’m not sure anyone anticipated or wanted – Limited Edition Peeps Oreo. This spring offering combines the Golden Oreo cookie with a fluorescent pink marshmallow Peeps flavored creme that unfortunately has no head you can rip off to begin your snacking.

The package exudes a very “Golden” aroma, with a strong vanilla, buttercream kind of sweetness that reminds me of a super intensified Nilla Wafer. It smells more like a cookie than a marshmallow, with no notable Peep perfume mingling in the wash of creaminess. They’re also very visually appealing – the spring colors and golden yellow glow simply look tasty.

The cookie is essentially a very sweet Golden Oreo, not too different from the Candy Corn flavor, which for me always tasted like a white frosted cupcake. What sets this one apart is a gritty sugar crystal crunch in the pink Peep creme that emulates the sparkly outside of the iconic marshmallow chick. This is the element I was most hoping Nabisco would incorporate into this mash up and they nailed it. It isn’t too intensely tough, but the creme adds a nice, smaller crunch to the bite of the big crumbly cookie.

The problem is that the Peeps Oreo doesn’t really remind me at all of a Peep. What they share in common is that they are a big blast of sugar; but the cookie is completely devoid of any of the marshmallow nuances that contribute to Peeps’ notoriously fluffy flavor. After eating two or three in a row, a strange artificial tang developed on my tongue and left a little bit of a filmy feeling in my mouth, but surprisingly it still wasn’t as unpleasant as some other weird food dyed flavors I’ve encountered over the years.

If you’re a diehard Peeps fan who simply can’t get enough cute marshmallows in your life, then definitely give this a try for the novelty texture in the creme. If you’re looking for the next greatest limited Oreo flavor, or a worthy follow up to the beloved Marshmallow Crispy version, you can probably skip over these and instead make a melted masterpiece by exploding a Peep in the microwave and stuffing it inside of two Golden Oreo wafers, which might be just a tad more fun.

  1. I felt these were pretty bad. Instead of throwing in vanillin like regular Oreos, it tastes like they replaced it one to one with maltol and that is pretty gross. I can’t imagine eating more than one of these. On the level of the Swedish Fish Oreos – that bad.

    1. Damn that’s intense! My girlfriend picked up on a stronger artificial tang than I did – I only got a slightly weird taste when I had multiple, and over the course of the weekend when I just had one I found it pretty normal tasting; super super sweet, but like a regular crunchy Golden Oreo. The beauty of different tastebuds! 🙂

      1. I tasted the bitterness of the pink coloring as well, it was not pleasant at all. However, my wife thought they were great and would get them again. There’s a good reason for this of course as some people have the “bitter gene” and some don’t – I do and my wife doesn’t – we got tested at a science expo where we were both given a little litmus-type strip of paper and I tasted a nasty bitter taste from it whereas both my wife and daughter tasted nothing at all.

  2. Didn’t taste like Peeps at all. Kinda tasted like a sweet Golden Oreo with sugar crystals here and there. Besides this, it made my husband’s and my mouth (tongue) super duper pink. I had to brush my teeth three times! Crazy.

    1. Yes!! I noticed that too! The pink dye is inTENSE! My whole tongue was glowing. I, too, think they’re more like a super sweet crunchy golden Oreo, which isn’t the worst thing in the world. Thanks for reading!

    1. Mmmmm that would be awesome. Some good ones coming this year though – apple pie and finally a coffee/mocha flavor! ?

  3. If anyone has had the pink frosting cake from HEB, that’s what these remind me of…pretty good.

  4. I bought the limited edition of Oreo peeps. These cookies are HORRIBLE. They were very very bitter. The more you eat the worst the flavor gets in your mouth. I had to go and brush my teeth several times and it did not help. They bitter taste last for 5 days in my mouth. I cant believe that they would put out such horrible tasting cookies without taste testing it first. I had to return the package to the store. NEVER AGAIN.

  5. I bought these the other day. When eating the whole cookie I didn’t get the peeps flavor but when I twisted the cookie apart and scraped the filling off with my teeth, I did get the crystalized sugar coating taste that the peeps have.

  6. Another little tidbit about these Peep Oreos…they turn your BM red! It was as if I’d eaten the Red Velvet Oreos, it was that red. The dyes in them must be super strong. This was definitely an impulse purchase at Walmart, but never again.

  7. Forgot to mention, I ate about 6 of them last night, and today I have an upset stomach and the runs along with the red poo. The package says it uses “Red 3”, so people who are particularly sensitive, beware!

  8. I love Peeps and was looking forward to the new Oreo cookie flavor. I was disappointed. Like others have said, it tastes nothing like a Peep. I guess I was looking for more of a marshmallow type of middle. So basically it’s nothing I would go out of my way to find.

  9. I didn’t think they tasted much like Peeps, but I still enjoyed them – love the sugary filling! I didn’t get the bitter taste, but I only ate 2 cookies in a day (trying to limit myself, since there are 140 calories in just 2 cookies! Yikes! That’s as many calories as are in a 12 oz can of Coke!). Maybe the more of them you eat, the more you taste the bitter? However, I still would enjoy one or two of these cookies as a small snack.

  10. We love the cookies they where really good i think i bought last peeps oreo in walgreens!!!
