REVIEW: Mystery Flavor Twizzlers

Mystery Flavor Twizzlers Package

What are Mystery Flavor Twizzlers?

Uh, I have no idea. That’s kinda the point.

How are they?

I think this may be the most successful “Mystery” flavor gimmick of all time, because these Twizzlers taste like… nothing. I’m mystified. The mystery is how anyone could possibly come away from these with an idea of what they just tasted.

I’m gonna try to explain, but I’m not sure I’ll be successful.

There are really no clues on the boring packaging to go off of, so let’s start with what we know, these probably aren’t a flavor that Twizzlers has done before. Just going off the purpley-brown color rules out Strawberry, Cherry, Chocolate, Grape, and Raspberry. I can’t help but feel like a standard fruit wouldn’t be worthy of a mystery flavor anyway.

The smell, which is infinitely stronger than the taste, reminded me of something familiar. I ultimately decided it was Hawaiian Punch.

Tastewise? Man, these just taste like bad Twizzlers.

Twizzlers don’t really bash you over the head with flavor as it is, they just taste like twisted leathery plastic more than anything. If I was blindfolded, I would think I was eating a regular red Twizzler from a bad batch. I tried really hard to concentrate, but my brain just kept thinking, “Oh, this is a Twizzler!”

They’re not sweet, they’re not especially fruity, and there’s just nothing distinct about them.

This could be fruit punch, but it literally packs zero punch, and I don’t think that’s unique enough to base a Mystery Flavor campaign around. Fruit Punch isn’t exciting, and this was, frankly, more like a fruit slap. Nah, it was more of a “poke,” to be honest.

Perhaps I was swayed by the color, but I thought maybe it could be a soda-based flavor. Perhaps cola or Dr Pepper? Ya know what, my final guess is Cherry Cola.

Anything else you need to know?

Nope, scratch that, Wikipedia claims Twizzlers briefly had a Cherry Cola flavor in 2006. Unless this is a rehash of that, I guess I’m just gonna stick with Fruit Punch Poke.

I honestly feel like this could be a prank, with the flavor being “nothing.” That would actually be hilarious.

I’m not kidding. I waited a week to write this review because I wanted to keep eating these while my taste buds were fresh. They always tasted like a sugarless red Twizzler with ZERO aftertaste.

Conclusion:

Mystery Flavor Twizzlers Question

So, like all great mysteries, this one ends… with zero resolution?!

Twizzlers were a perfect brand to try the mystery thing – they’re literally twists! I don’t know how they failed so miserably.

Please try these and help me understand what the heck I’ve been eating. I’ll revisit them after every guess because I’m definitely gonna have these lying around for a while. At least I’ll have some environmentally safe drinking straws to sip cherry cola through if I could actually manage to tug-o-war another one out of the sticky bag.

  1. Warning, about to say what I think they are… Blueberry. They’re very mild, though, and as your review helpfully pointed out, not particularly appealing.

    1. I tried one yesterday after reading this, and you may be right. i kept convincing myself it was blueberry.,, but i’m still not sold, and i think that’s a super boring mystery flavor. why not just release blueberry twizzlers and go big on the mystery flavor.

    1. Haha! I don’t know if that was supposed to be funny, and its just funny to think about them doing that.

  2. My very first thought, simply upon initial sighting of your 1st pic was blackberry. My only qualm about saying that is that, while blackberry isn’t exactly that wacky, it may still be deemed too much of an “unusual” flavor, in this market.

At any rate, I’m sticking with that; so, there ya go. (Also, keeping in mind, that I have not, personally tried them.)

  3. I truly thought they would be Dr. Pepper because a few years ago they sold some Dr. Pepper twizzlers and they were absolutely delicious-I was hoping they were bringing them back. I bought a bag and no such luck-there is a distinct mild flavor of something I just can’t put my finger on but I’m not crazy about them-please bring back Dr. Pepper Twizzlers-they were worth buying!

  4. Twizzlers already have a dr pepper flavor actually! You can get it at dollar tree

  5. My first guess was plum or date, but after smelling them again I have came to the conclusion that it is actually strawberry poptart. As poptarts don’t really taste like anything, especially the outside with no filling or frosting.

  6. I’m convinced they are duplicating the “huckleberry” flavor of the Australian licorice; that flavor is similar to grape and berry mixed. And it is marketed as a violet colored licorice. This merlot-colored twizzler is bland, I admit. But I liked it. Those orange ones in the mixed bag are disgusting. . . this is okay in comparison.

  7. They smell super strongly of wine to me. But flavor is definitely mild. I was thinking blueberry or maybe mixed berry.

  8. You must not have a very strong palate. These were, by far, the best twizzlers I’ve ever had, and most of the internet agrees. They’re Wild Berry, btw.

  9. Your taste buds must be broken, dude. These definitely have a distinct berry flavor, and certainly don’t taste like nothing. I’m was originally thinking raspberry or black cherry, but now that others have mentioned blueberry, that seems to also be a possibility as well. Either way, I think they are delicious. I have always loved the lightly sweet Twizzler flavors.

  10. NO FLAVOR, like wax lips from years back. Obviously they don’t taste like raspberry cuz of all the reviews I’ve read so far not one guessed that! Try again and up the flavor.

  11. I thought maybe grape or blueberry but with a terrible aftertaste. Smell is far more stronger than taste. The color is not appetizing at all.
